  • 1996 3.4DOHC INTO '95 Z34

I have a 95 z34 that has a blown motor and I have a motor out of a 96 z34 to replace my current one. What do I have to take into consideration when we do the swap? I'm not to sure... here is a link to pics of the motor:

    Input is appreciated. Thanks!
    Swap soon!

hope u have the harness and pcm with that motor. if not u will have to adapt everything to the 95 setup. u will have to adapt the vac hoses. but on a positive note most of you're wiring is the same and most of your sensors are in the same spot. what is different is the coil pack. u can 2 ways with this, take your 95 coil packs off of the 95 and mount them on the 96, then u will have to chop off the top of your plug wire boots on the rear. or u can cut, splice, and lengthen your wires to go to the 96 packs. next there is a difference in your egr there are 3 ways u can do this as but i am only knowlegable on the 2. 1st put the 95 intake on your 96 engine and there will be no problem, also u won't have to chop off the tops of your rear plug wires. wait u will have to do 1 thing, change the flange on the top of the egr tube to a 95 flange.

2next retrofit your 96 intake to a 95 setup. disconnect the egr solenoid and plug the holes on your exhaust manifolds, and intakeif u want to bypass it. or u will have to make a series of adapter flanges to retrofit your 95 egr solenoid to the 96 intake to adapt it. this is assuming u go to obd1.

if u want to go to obd2 ie the 96 harness. check your main harness connectors 1st. like usually the engine harness connects to the interior harness via a very large bulk connector. if u are lucky they might be the same but i doubt it. actually i know they aren't the same b/c the diag port has a different configuration for obd2.

if u have a few manuals and alot of time go fully to obd2. if u have alot of green call some wiring companies and they might be able to fab 1 up for u.

or u can adapt everything over except the intake and go obd1 with a 96 intake. but then u will either have to disconnect and plug up your egr stuff, or have some custom brackets made and adapt it.

if u want to go quick and easy route put your 95 intake on your 96, and put your 95 coilpack on your 96. maybe switch a few sensors everything will be a direct swap to obd1.

i don't know about the sensors on the bottom half of the engine since i was only in volved in a upper half swap. but from what i seen and was told the tps, iat, iac, cam bank sensor, and coolant temp sensor are the same. just make a visual inspection to see if the rest are the same.

hope that helps. also the reason i gave up for now anyway is i fucked up and cracked the lim and need another one. i used steel resin and it looks like it is repaired but i am not going to chance it. plus i wanted to eventually have it ported and i am not going to port damaged goods. if u need any more info just pm me and i will see what i can find out for u. also what direction are u going to take with this?ltr.

thanks for the help, this is a
I was under the impression that the 95 3.1's were obdI and the 3.4dohc's were obdII; If that is the case than I am set computer wise.
Assuming that everything is obdII, would you recommend that I get a new intake, etc? the sensors should all adapt over, except for the fact that there is the extra one on the front of the motor. Were you able to look at the pics I posted on the site dohcfiend? are you able to tell from looking at the pics what I might need? thanks for the help offer I will definitely have some more questions!
        Swap soon!

Why cant you use your 95 computer with the 96 engine? I dont see that being much difference, just swap your sensors off the old block.

95dohcBlackZ34, I'd ignore the above posts if I were you, they are full of misinformation. I swear, more and more its the blind leading the blind on this board.

The engine could care less if the computer running it is OBD I or OBD II. It is a direct swap. You can use your 95 ecm to control the 96 engine with no problems whatsoever. They use the same sensors, etc. You could even use your 95 intake manifolds on the 96 motor so there will be no problems with the egr setup, although you would have to adapt the egr tube because as I understand the 96 exhaust manifolds use a different style connection, but that shouldnt be too difficult.

edit: I guess ben snuck in while i was typing this... so posts above his is what i was referring to.

I think it's pretty obvious you don't know what you are talking about. I mean come on, "Plentums"? Why misinform someone asking a question when you have no idea what youre talking about?

what was wrong with the info i gave? i gave info on a broad range of options. like using a 95 setup with a 96 engine and 96 intake, using a 95 setup with a 95 intake,
i informed him of the difference in egr setups and his options on that, the difference in coilpack locations and his options with that. i told him about what i knew about the sensors on the top half of the motor.

i informed him on a few wiring differences that i knew of if he wanted to go obdII. i also said the easiest way to go was use a 95 obd1 setup.

ben said about the same thing but he just used alot less words.

95dohcBlackZ34: i have a complete 95 upper intake, lower lower intake, fuel rail, and throttlebody for a 95 dohc if u need 1. i can either sell it to ya or trade u for the 96 setup and pay u for it. but i was under the impression u already had a 95 intake setup.

I was under the impression that the entire 96 engine was going in.

You just shot yourself in the foot again... the upper intake and TB are one piece in '95.

i was just giving him his options and letting him know the differences that i had observed and what ways he could possibly go about it.

like the coilpack for instance. on the 96 it is mounted on the left rear of the upper intake. on the 95 it is mounted under the front exhaust manifold. yea the 96 will work but he will have to cut and splice to lengthen the wires to fit it. or he just took the coilpack off of the 95 and mounted it on the 96 the wires would plug right in np. and all he has to do is use the 95 engine as reference to mount it properly on the 96. 2 possible means to an end it just depends on how much work he wants to do and his wiring skills for that 1 situation.

well yea, but 95dohcBlackZ34 might not have known and if i didn't mention it. the other guy might ask"what about the tb?" so i was just throwing that out there to save myself from another post. but that backfired. damn murphy and his laws.

the whole engine is going in. I don't plan on splicing the wires though. The engine is complete. The pointers you guys are making are really helpful, thanks. As everyone knows, if one thing isn't configged or tricked into thinking otherwise she ain't gonna start! My wiring skills are not good at all, I have to have a wiring guru look at things (please let me know if I'm wrong)
I have the intake and stuff because I have the '95 z with the '95 engine with everything in it still in the car. I'm not taking it out until I can make sure that everything is good, and thats why I am here. I can pretty much tell also what makes sense and what does not, although I am not too familiar with the engine control /wiring side of things. Sensors should all work, great!
                            Swap soon!

The wiring difference between 91 and 96 is there, not sure of 95 to 96. I am not sure all the sensor have the same connectors and wiring to them but you need to make sure.
