  • 1997 3100

I have a 97 olds cutlass (not supreme, same as malibu) with a blown 3100. The cam shaft snapped, likely from the number of times the intake manifold failed and leaked coolant onto it..... but anyways..

Looking for a replacement, I noticed on the car part search sites and when i call junkyards, they only list 1997 engines as compatible, not 1998 or newer.

If I tell them to search for a 1998 cutlass, they find a bunch of engines (1998-2000).

Was their something different about the 3100 in the 1997 cutlass from other yearsmodels?

I am just looking for a bolt in replacement, need to get my car going again soon!

    Thanks in advance!

You can use any 3100/3400 basically. 2000+ will have large port intake manifolds, which make more power. You'll need to tap the coolant port on the LIM with a 3/4" NPT tap IIRC if you want to use the large port one. Also in 2000+ they EGR changed, but you can use the 2000+ upper intake and the new style EGR and EGR tube just fine.

Or you can swap your old intake manifolds over and run the small port and not worry about the small details. Regardless, you should do the intake gasket on the new engine to prevent the issue in the future, and use the metal dorman or felpro gaskets so you don't ever have to worry again.

Also, you will want to re-use your injectors and FPR/fuel rail. One reason is later years got higher pressures and also you don't know how long the injectors of the donor engine have sat for, so they might be stuck.

But short answer is you can use a newer engine, and swap your intakes over, or keep the new 2000+ intakes if you get an engine that new, and use the new style EGR and EGR tube, and tap the lower intake coolant port for your coolant fitting. Or if you get it with the new engine, adapt the new style metal coolant tube to yours (new style pushes in with an o-ring). Join it with some rubber tube and clamps, weld the two together, or join with compression fittings. Several options.
