  • 3500 in third gen cavalier

ive done some searching but not finding wat im lookin for. im gettin a 97 cavz24 this week and was plannin to do a 3400 swap then later do a 3500 top swap but started to think, just start with a whole 3500, has this been done to a third gen obd2 car. i know i would need an external crank trigger but as far as ecm and a few other things just wonderin how much harder its gonna be than a 3400 swap.

sorry if a simaler threads been posted but i couldent find it.

jbody.org I think is the message board with a lot of 3rd gen cavs with 3400 swaps. You'll need to modify a few extra things, and tuning is a must. The bracket from trans to engine is different and needs modding or custom made. The mounting is prety close to the same though. Gotta use the 3100/3400 fuel rail and injectors, and UIM (big port 3100 only or 3400) or clearance the 3500 UIM with a TB adapter (3500 is drive by wire) and route your own vacuum tubes.

Not super hard but several little things. CTS is different thread and sits in the head, you can drill and tap the 3500 LIM the same spot as the 3400 ones and put the 3 wire in if you want.

I'd use a 3400 ECM OBDII and get DHP or HP tuners so you can tune it for the 3500. The 3500 ECM will have CAN (or CAN2, whatever they use now) and will need body control modules and all kinds of stupid things.

Yeah a 3400 harness will work just fine you'll need the external crank trigger though.

a few people who have done this swap have piggybacked an OBD1 ECM to run the engine, and let the OBD2 ecm run the gauges and other junk. Seems to work well.

i can only think of maybe 3 3400 swapped 3rd gens, most of those guys are pretty into the 4cyls.. lol

Won't pertain to your car all the way, since thats a W body, but gives you some ideas.

If you go to J Body Club of Ontario and have a look there are actually several 3500 3rd gen Cavys, and a couple even managed to keep the A/C

You may have to join to ask questions, but it's free.
