  • 3.4 questions

im in the planning of a 3.4 swap for my s10. im shooting for around 275 horse at the crank, and drop in simplicity. dont mind doing some modiying of the wiring, pcm, etc, just no tranny swap or making motor mounts and headers. the reason im going with the 3.4 is that its the only one that i know of that will drop in. im looking for suggestions on how to get to my power goal. i was thinking about going with somme heads form a DOHC, but dont know if they would mate to a RWD block. also would like to use as much aluminum as possible to keep weight down. it also has to remain stone ax streetable. its in my daily, after all.
    my questions are:
    1. will the DOHC heds fit the RWD block? what supporting stff would i need?
    2. if the DOHC heads wont work, what heads would? assume porting and polishing of whatever heads i go with.
    3. what headers will work? ive only found pre-made headers for the 2.8/3.4 camaro heads, so...
    4. can i ghet to my power goals with a small cam and stock heads?
    5. what intake setup?
    6. any torque converter/flexplate balance issues?

thanks for any help opu can throw my way.

Forget the DOHC idea the blocks are different enough that the heads won't work. 3400 or 3500 heads with matching intake would be aluminum and flow better then the iron heads. Your horse power goal may be more that a daily driver NA engine can do. Were you thinking NOS, turbo, or a supercharger?

a turbo had crossed my mind, but i was hoping to see what i could get NA first. 275 is a little much out of a 3.4. darn. what kind of power can i expect with the 3500 top end (what donor and what parts to convert?) thats been ported and polished, 10:1 compression, and a ported an polished intake manifold from the 3500? also, what cam? i saw some pretty good ones on cranes website. i know ill need to do some rewiring and PCM swapping, as im pretty sure that the 3500 intake is not designed for a TBI unit. also, will my headers fit?

sorry for the noob questions. ive never messed with a six cyl other that a 225 slant, and im ususally a mopar guy. im just trying something new and different to me (like efi and GM).

      thanks for all the help.

The 3500 Or 3400 top end don't leave room for distrubutors either. people make them work in camaros and firebirds. Try reading posts to see how they did it, it should work in your s-10 also. 10:1 is difficult with 3500 heads with out custum pistons. 3400 pistons will give you 9.2:1 and 3.4L pistons will give you 12.5:1. If you use those heads and with tuning and enough cam you should get close to your goal.
