Hey guys, Im going a different route right now with my 3400 swap and Im just going to do a top end swap for now. Im getting ready to purchase the head gasket kit I need, but Im not sure which one to get. Do I get the one from the motor I pulled (01 Impala 3400) or from the motor I have in the car now (95 Cutlass 3100)? Or do I need to piece it together from both motors. TIA.

I always say to use the bore sized gasket for your block, not your top end.
3100 use 3100, 3400 use 3400, and so on... The better the fire ring matches the bore the better the sealing you'll get with it.

If you are buying from GM i'd get a gasket set for a '04 3100. It'll have the better graphite headgaskets and the propper LIM and UIM gaskets for the 3400 top end.
Or just '04 3100 headgaskets and a Felpro perma-dry LIM set...

If you get a felpro top end kit it will have the plastic LIM gaskets.
So if you want metal, get the metal felpro or dorman LIM gasket kit for a 3400 (same thing as the large port 3100's) and then get '04 3100 headgaskets from the dealer (they are graphite). Or just get them separately somewhere.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

if you get 3100 head gaskets check them on the head to make sure the gasket clears the combustion chambers. i dont know the differences between the 3400 and 3100 heads but with my 3500 heads my 3400 head gasket was in the combustion chamber by a hair (no1 else has had that problem). i didnt like it so i went with 3500 head gaskets..
chances are it will be perfectly fine but it couldnt hurt to check IMO. even in my case it probly would have been fine to use the 3400 gaskets but i didnt wanna chance it. just something else to think aboutsigpic

Thanks for all the info guys. I just picked up a head gasket kit from a 3400 minus the head and exhaust gaskets so Ill go with the 3100 head gaskets, but what about the exhaust? I have both the front and rear manifolds from the 3400.

Exhaust gaskets should be the same from small port 3100 through 3400 I would assume. Those ports didn't change AFAIK in size.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

The 3400 gaskets will even fit 3500 heads
