  • Rplace at 2.2 with a 3.1

Ok, I know this is kinda a common thing, or well as far as I can tell, but no one can give me the answer I need. I have a 96 chevy cavi with a 2.2 that some how I blew or something went horrid with in it and now it sounds like a valve is pinging. I also have my 90 lumina euro with the 3.1, and it body behind the driver door is falling off hard core style. The 3.1 minus its miles is in great shape, and the cavi is in great shape minus its body. I know you all reading this can see where I am going with this. I know alot of it has to go over with the motor, such as all the computer stuff, and a new wiring harness, BUT, i don't know anything about a motor mount. As in size, another model car will work thats not on either of those two like one from a 2.8 or something. Clear details work best cause I really am not all that mechanically savy, I just think I am.

This may not be feasible depending on your local emissions laws. The redesigned Cavs never had a six cylinder option, and the engine you wish to swap is older than the target vehicle. I've heard that it's not legal to swap an older engine into a newer car, but I'd like to be disproven.

It would be illegal yes, if Ohio still had an E-Check system, however with out it my law books says that it nulls any previous Emissions laws, even if taken my an account of motor swapping. The bolt patterns from the 90 3.1 will line right up to the 96 tranny on the cavi. I know that the ECU will have to come over, the wiring harness will need to be new. Its the motor mounting that i need dimensions for all that swap.

eeeewwww several people have installed the Generation 3 3100/3400 engines in the 3rd gen Cavaliers but i think only 1 guy put in an old Gen2 3.1.. That's alot of work for pretty poor results.

any engine swap into the 3rd gen is a PITA, even the 3100/3400 swap requires random parts from a 3100 Grand Am, some fabrication and other stuff. We're in the planning stages of putting a cammed/P&P'd 3400 into a 96 Sunfire but the current plan is to use the Sunfire PCM to run the gauges and piggyback the older OBD1 ECM to run the engine.

I guess my above post wasn't clear, I am really not looking for a performance increase by any means. It's just what I have to work with. But I see what you are saying with your plan on the sunfire.
