  • 3.4 swap to 1986 cherokee

next week i begin a 2.8 to 3.4 swap on my carb cherokee. not sure whether to do fuel injection or not do any of you know how much the wireing harness is? someone said 300-400 but that was for a 4.3 swap$$$ im expecting more. if someone who did the whole fuel injection swap could tell me how much it costs$$$ that would be great im planning on $1475 with $700 motor

If you can get a donor Camaro engine harness and ECM it wont be expensive and the swap will be easy. Are you going to rebuild the motor when you get it?

no i plan on just checking out things and replacing gaskets, and run a compression check...i already am getting the computer, how hard would it be for them to pull the wireing harness? and i dont want it to be as messy as the 1985 forum when he did efi. if the engine was from a manual would this make it easier because i read the autos are electronically different engines.

oh and the engine only has 70k on it which is "ok" i guess.

Remove the whole engine with the harness on and just un plug it from the firewall. Remove the ECM from inside the car. I think they were still inside on that year of Camaro. When you get the ECM out you will need that half of the harness too. Do not cut any wires just un plug them, everything has a connector somewhere.

No. It will probably take you a few hours to take it out with out cutting anything. The ecm is in the top right hand corner of the engine bay so you can unplug it there, but that is just the start.

i forgot to say that the engine was already removed so wouldnt that make it easy to remove the harness?

yes it would be easier with the engine already out. You may want to check but most junk yards are not going to take the time to unplug all of the sensors, they normally just cut all of the wires, so you are going to want to check on that.

And I don't think there is really a cut and dry answer on "how easy is it to use the camaro harness", I will post more about this once my jeep is actually driveable.

My engine also supposedly had 70k miles. Runs good, but I had to replace my fuel injectors (one was stuck open). I did nothing to my engine otherwise, just switched the oil pan and relocated the starter. However, I would recommend putting in a better cam while you have the engine out.

The ECU and harness is different for the auto. I bought a M/T ECU off eBay for like $40. I think you can just strip the extra A/T wiring out of the harness and be fine. There will be a bunch of stuff in there you won't need anyway.

thanks, yea im ordering a painlees if the camaro harness is too much, i have the engine out now and have started taking off things of the 2.8 i need. im buying and putting on a new clutch disc, and timing chain. maybe i should check out the injectors while the engine is out?
