89 z24 engine options?

I need to replace my engine and I'm wondering what are my options as far as engines, will a 3.1 out of a 2000 malibu fit my automatic transmission? or do I need to stick to the 88 - 89 2.8L?

Would a 3.1L out of a 90 z24 work?

you can put in just about any FWD 60degree engine you want.... As long as you leave the engine stock and your tranny is in good shape it'll be fine.

Here is a guide to putting a newer Gen3 engine into a Z24.. I followed it 3 years ago and it worked great.
