In my quest to find a good middle ground for a stock Trooper upgrade, it's being suggested to me that I should be able to bolt my TBI intake from the iron head to Gen2 3100 aluminum heads. Use the 3100 pistons for 9.6:1 compression, a bigger TB and port the intake to match - might net some decent gains. But is this possible, or just my usual crazy talk?

3100 is gen3. No way in hell would that work. The intake ports are evenly spaced on 3x00's between each other.
And AFAIK the iron head intake won't bolt up to the gen2 heads either.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

Ok, I don't have all my Gens and displacements right, so I guess I meant to say Gen2 2.8 heads on a Gen1 2.8 stroked to 3.1...
I need to look over the family tree again.'98 Volvo V90 - Ford 5.0 swap in progress

I'm not sure on the gen2 FWD aluminum heads though. So it may or may not be possible. I have no definitive answer for you.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

just look at the pics here on the site...there are plenty of comparrison pics!
generally, you cant mix and match the generations between intakes and heads.
i suggest just going with all gen 3 parts, use 3100 if you have a 2.8 or 3.1, and use 3400/3500 if you have a 3.4.
youll need to swap pistons, and do some other work, but its worth it3500, 1280 cam and PR, ls6 valve springs, port and polished heads, ported lim, ported uim, 4.3 70mm tb, ported trueleo headers and y pipe ALL FOR SALE (minus the car)

3400 heads will work just fine on a 2.8/3.1l block. They use 3400 heads on the 2000+ 3100's.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

Yeah, I know all that. I'm still trying to find a way to keep the TBI injection.
I have my friend talked into going multiport on his, but if there was some way to keep the TBI and get respectable preformance, we'd try it. Just trying to help out the Trooper enthusiast community too...'98 Volvo V90 - Ford 5.0 swap in progress

Yeah I know. Tell em go big or go home! :P If you get a gen3 swap done and do a how-to maybe they will follow? lol. Only reason I modded my car instead of an engine swap is it's got decent power and heads already.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

Yeah, that's about where I'm at. I don't think the 3.4 SFI swap ended up netting much more than a 3.4 TBI swap. Alot of extra money and work for nothing.'98 Volvo V90 - Ford 5.0 swap in progress

None of generations interchange as far as the top end is concerned. The SFI stuff from the Camaro will not net you any more power than a bored out 2.8L Intake on top of a 3.4L. It is the cheapest way to go and can be done fast.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma
