  • '95 3100 oil filter hex screw

howdy my first post on here nice site set up just like my gm-trucks.com site!
    OK heres my question:
just swapped a bad motor in my cutlass with one of the same year grand prix (1995) i swapped out the oil filter housing from the cutlass to the new motor, i have it in the car now and notice the oil filter sits straight up and down and i dont think it will come off without hitting the craddle, the motor on the grand prix did not have a oil filter housing and screwed in on an angle directly to the block allowing easy removal, i plan on swapping it back i guess i have no idea why the cutlass would have it that close to the craddle. So how is your oil filter positioned on your 94-97 3100 cutlass??? does the filter sit straight up and down or on an angle???

it shouldnt hit the cradle. once i unscrew the filter it has just enough clearance to slide the filter out without spilling oil.

i actually like the adapter as it makes it cleaner when doing oil changes. i added one to my grand am, and mine has about 3/4 inch clearance between the filter and the subframe.
this is using the slightly larger filter than stock, im using a m1-201 vs the m1-101. both mobil one numbers.

In the Cutlass Supreme, it sticks out, and has a plastic shield under it so that when you remove it, oil does not spill on the cradle.

This is the filter in my 1988 Cutlass Supreme (swapped in 3100 SFI), but my 1996 Grand Prix, and my 1995 Cutlass Supreme are all the same way.

In mine, I have an OIL COOLER. That is the silver thing that the filter sits on. If I didn't have the cooler, then the filter would fit in the exact same way, just against the block.

The only other thing I can think of is if you either have, or the old engine came out of, a Cutlass CIERA. That might have the neck you are talking about.

hmmm sounds like either way! hahaha, ok well i'll make sure i have the hex screw to change it back when i do the oil change just in case it doesnt clear! i'll find out in 2900 more miles!
Actually the motor came from a grand prix and it had the slanted filter and i ALMOST left it, knowing now that it would be fine i would have.

There are many different ways of doing things, but keep in mind that different PLATFORMS will have different setups for the subframe.

yeah its the small differences that will get ya sometimes, however i found the motor from the grand prix to be almost a direct drop in!!

that's weird, usually that adapter is only found on the A-bodies (Cutlass Ciera, Buick Century) 3100's

yeah thats why i wonder if it had a different motor before, i have the hex screw though so when i change the oil i'll take the housing off and just screw the filter to the block like it was on the motor i just put in. When replacing the motor i noticed a couple of missing bolts here or there which led me to believe it was not the original motor.
