  • exact parts needed for top end swap into olds

    i have: 1995 olds ciera with 3100.
    swapping in 01 3100 UIM & LIM
i have the fuel rails, injectors and a 96 grand prix 3100 ecm

my questions is what gaskets and what throttle body to use and what else am i missing? i did a search but only came up w/ info on the 2.8 and 3.1

no plans on doing the heads or exhaust just figured i'd do the manifolds since the gaskets went bad anyway.

If you don't have roller rockers, make sure you grind on the lower intake to clear the rocker arms. Use your stock TB or find a 56mm off a 3400 and swap you linkage in. You need the lower intake gaskets that fit your heads, metal preferred. 99 grand am perhaps? metal lower felpro 980003T? 3T or 4T.

You will have to do some wiring to use the newer computer. It will need a downstream O2 sensor (you can just use an emulator). The EGR is different as well. You might have some issues with the EGR PIPE. I am not sure which upper intake you have, and if they make a pipe that will fit from your exhaust manifold to the plenum.

With the 1996 ECM, you will also most likely have to add a MAF (seeing that the 1996 3100 is OBD2).

You'll need the 00+ EGR adapter sold on the store here. You will have to tap and thread the coolant pipe that goes into the LIM. Use gaskets that are made for your year heads. Using the metal felpro problem solver ones is recommended. MS98004T That's what I did. It comes with a new o-ring for water pump housing pipe and thermostat gasket, and valve cover and EGR gaskets. You should also get a brown silicone o-ring from the dealer for the oil pump drive shaft so it doesn't leak anymore at this time too. You'll also have to grab an upper intake manifold gasket for the larger 3400 style port upper. Felpro MS90505 or equivalent brand.

You can re-use your injectors/etc. The ECM you don't need unless you want to swap to OBD2 but then you'll need more wiring changes and a MAF as stated above. Going to OBD2 you can get a tuner and tune it, but it's not really needed if all you are doing is just swaping to big manifolds and that's it.

I had to grind the LIM to clear the rockers, because I did not have the roller fulcrum rockers. You will probably have to as well. Or if you are lucky and have notches for the roller rockers in your heads, you can steal some from a 96-99 or whenever it was still the same studs and swap them over.

http://60degreev6.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=641&c=7 After (I still had to take more off when I went to bolt it down and saw where the rockers came to)
Becarefull not to grind through the runner.

I also had to get a bolt and nut for the alternator since the original ones that went to the upper intake didn't bolt up, but I have a 3500 plenum. But it may be the same case for the large port ones too.

IsaacHayes, he said he is swapping in a 1996 Grand Prix 3100 PCM, so he will not need the EGR adapter. The 1996 Grand Prix 3100 is the LINEAR EGR.

If he keeps the 1995 PCM, then he will need the adapter, but which one he needs will be dependant on the upper intake manifold he uses. Still doesn't matter. Ben sells both of the adapters. But if he does the 1996 PCM, he will not need one at all.

The thing about the alt bracket not fitting is true as well. When I did the large intake swap on my 1996 Grand Prix, the little corner brace didn't fit anymore. I just did the nut and bolt thing like you did.

i think im gonna hold off on the computer swap. I am having trouble finding a wire harness thats not beat to death.

as far as the rockers go, I never even thought about that. Can they be ground with a Dremel tool?

I think the egr adapter is all I'm missing now, correct?

will my stock tb fit for sure? I had a UIM about a year ago from a venture van (blank 3400) and the area where the tb bolts on was different so i sold it

Yes EGR adapter, and rocker clearance are your only real issues right now. Other than tapping the coolant pipe thing on the LIM.

TB's are exact same other than the 3400 is 56mm vs 52mm for the 3100. No idea why your venture van one was different.... that doesn't make sense!

If your dremel is powerfull enough you can grind away the LIM with it, but it will take a long time!!! Air die grinder is best. But I've used the dremel/craftsman one along with the air grinder because my compressor was so small. The dremel gets hot so you gotta let it cool off.

But if you find out your heads have notches for the roller rocker studs then you can swap those on and save yourself some work and have less friction too. Not sure if you can peak through the oil fill cap and see or not hehehe.

there are 2 different EGR adaters for 2 different styles of egr. If you are not certain, post a pic, and we can tell you which one you need.

Waiting on the wiring might be a good idea as well. There is a lot more involved going from a 1995 to a 1996.

One thing that I should warn you is do NOT GRIND THE ROCKERS. Grind the lower intake manifold. If you grind the rockers, you weaken them. It is probably just the way you wrote it.

I don't know about your throttle body. I have seen some weird CIERA 3100's that had a funky setup (similar to the 3300, and 3800's). If you can get a pic of what you have, we can tell you what you might need.

01 LIM & UIM he said so the 2000+ EGR adapter in the store. Yeah you can't grind the rockers enough to clear them, gotta grind the lower intake manifold.

I forgot what cars were the A body. Your Ciera is an A body!! So you have a 3100 with a removable prom (meaning you can actually burn a chip/get an emulator and tune!!) MAF and weird plenum. It either has the MAF built into the TB, or the TB was built into the plenum. I think it was the later.. And no MAP sensor.

So your car is a bit of an odd-ball when it comes to 3100's. Let me look for some pictures online of the plenum. (or post some if you can) and I will get back to this post. I'm sure we can make it work. You will have to re-use your MAF of course.

EDIT: Having a hard time finding a good picture of the TB/MAF/Plenum. Can you get a good close up?
I'm sure you can just use a normal 3x00 TB, and hook up your linkage and if the MAF is built into the TB then you should be able to use one from a 96 car.

MAF and TB are one unit.

Then He will need a normal 3x00 TB and a MAF from a 96 + 3x00 car. Unless the MAF on the A body is different technology?

                        the new and the old

i thought 96+ had the separate MAF & TB?

Yes. All 3100/3400 but the A bodies (yours) had seperate TB and MAFs. And they didn't use a MAF until 96. But still used the same TB.

Looks like you might have to possibly splice on a pigtail for the 96 MAF if the connector is different. You will need the normal 3x00 TB, and also the TB linkage bracket. And it looks like your TB linkage comes from the side ?? Can't see clearly there. So possibly you may even need to get some throttle cables from a 94-98 N body, or 94-96 L body /etc whatever is closest to the size of your car.... I think those are pretty close??? That is if your throttle cables are not long enough which I think will be the case with the normal 3x00 style linkage bracket.

This is a pic of my setup, L body. I do have a 3500 plenum and TB adapter on there, but the linkage and linkage bracket and TB are stock 3100/3400 pieces.

is there not an adapter for this type of tb & linkage to the large port manifolds?

You have that weird setup I was thinking about. Although it is a little restrictive (it has a built in MAF), it WILL bolt up to your new intake manifold, so you can use it until we can figure out something better to use. We will need to figure out which car has the proper cables, and stuff, but until then you can use yours.

This is the EGR adapter you will need if you keep your stock PCM:

You have a throttle body setup that was similar to the buick engines (3300 and 3800), so not only will you need new throttle cables, you will also need the cruise control cable as well.
