  • 3400 Fiero swap questions

Hey, I need to rapid fire some build questions about my 3.4/3400 hybrid plans as well pick someones brain about repinning my ECU and all that for my 86 Fiasco.

Does anybody use an instant messenger that I can add on and find out a few things from? I'd really appreciate it.

I think I just need to read up on what engines run on which ECMs (which ECMs can run which codes), and go from there, it's still gonna suck converting my old crap harness to work with a 3x00...

Just re-wire your existing wires that go to the distributor to run the DIS like shown in the links. Then run some 3.1mpfi code and tune it from there.

Wouldn't it be best to switch to an OBD II able ECU for tunability and the most options?

Honestly it would be more work, and money. There is lots of info out there for OBDI tuning, and you can get an emulator to allow you to do on the fly updating/tuning. The people that do OBDII swaps are usually the ones who have 94-95 which is OBDI but un-tuneable ECM. Those it's easier to go to OBDII since the oddball ECM is sorta OBD1.5 already and they have electronically controlled transmissions that need to stay with the newer ECM's to be controlled.

OBDI is the way to go in your situation. Lots of people have hot setups tuned with OBDI. Turbos, N/A, etc and running well.

              K this is good news.

I really need to buff up my ECU knowledge, it's pretty rudimentary still.
I may be able to use that ECU from a turbo grand prix in that Pennocks thread and run a code that'll support up the needs of a 3.4/3500 topend hybrid eh...? The 7730 box IIRC? I wasn't aware it was dynamically tuneable? I figured once a chip was burned with the maps/tables it was a done deal and you'd need another one to change anything, which, with my skill with the software and EFI in general, would take forever, or a lot of money to get someone to do it for me...

I'm no expert on all the tuning, or what the hardware is, but I know it's out there. Check out www.moates.net I can't help you though with what pieces you need from there however. The Ostrich emulator lets you update the code without swapping out new burned chips and it may even let you change stuff while the car is running?? Not sure on that one. And you can scan the car to see what your O2, and fuel trims are, etc.

The 7730 or whatever it is can run different code from different cars. You would want to run probably the beretta or cavalier 3.1mpfi aluminum head bin code file and then you'll have to tune it from there for the added fuel that the 3500 heads and .3l displacement will require. The aluminum head code will have/require less spark than the iron heads because they are a "fast burn" head. You can run the turbo grand prix bin code if you plan on boosting too.

There are a few people too that could burn you a chip or perhaps even get you started with some base modified code. I don't know if Sappy on the site here would be able to tune it or not without having the car with him. I know there are several people on www.v6z24.com that can burn chips and have code for a 3400 running mpfi, that would probably be a good base to start from then modify it for the extra flow of the 3500 heads. It depends on what injectors you are running too as that table will need to be updated with the correct flow rate.
