  • 1988 corsica 2.8 -1993 corsica 3.1 engine swap

i have a 1988 corsica with a 2.8(3spd a/t tranny), there is a pretty heavy knocking sound from under the front head, i took off the rocker arm cover, there is almost no oil pressure out the push rods. i think the oil pump went and possibly caused a rod bearing or lifter to go(causing the knocking).
i have a friend with a 3.1 with only 130K on it, he flipped it and caved the roof in. i'm thinking of putting his motor and tranny(4spd a/t) in. the pcms are both the same, with different proms, can i just swap the motor and tranny, hook up the bulkhead wiring harness connector, change prom and be back off to the races.
    any insight would be appreciated

The Corsica didn't get a 4-spd auto until 1994. The 93 should have the same tranny as your 88.

As far as the swap goes, yeah it should be just about that straight forward.

      2.8 to 3.1

will a 3.1l lumina block with a vin code d fit in my 1988 corsica if i used all of my 1988 emission control devices and a custom chip set for batch ignition on 3.1 displacement? the 3.1 out of the corsica didn't pan out.

3.1 in a Lumina should be a vin code of T.

The Lumina only had 3 engines that I am aware of. The 2.5 which is an R, 3.1 which is a T, and 3.4 which is an X. The newer Lumina's also got the buick engine 3800 which is a K, and the 3100 which is an M.

Even still, the block's are all the same between the V6's (3.1).

You can even use the vin M block (3100), but if you did that, you would probably want to go ahead and use the complete 3100.

I also looked at the older VIN CODES for the GEN 1 engines. The camaro 3.1 was still listed as a vin T, and the newer camaro 3.4 was an S.

Kinda need to know more about which engine you are going with. Unless you just happened to find something I have not ever come across.

Even still, you can get ANY 3.1 block (1989-1993 and the 1994 3.1 Lumina) and pretty much drop it right in. It will bolt right up to everything you have in there.

His 3 spd. auto may be a T125 without a lockup torque converter as this was the standard auto trans in the earlier cars. The '93 3.1 Corsica came with a T125C which has the lockup torque converter and many people mistake it as a 4 sp. trans. Brad was correct in saying the 4 spd. auto was not available in the Corsica/Beretta cars until '94.

            2.8 to 3.1 crankshaft

if i throw a stock 3.1 crankshaft into my 2.8, will it turn it into a 3.1? are the connecting rods and pistons the same? i can get all of these things in ebay for cheap.

you need to swap out the connecting rods too.

A 3.1 is nothing but a STROKED 2.8. Put in a 3.1 crank and connecting rods and you have a 3.1

                high lift camshaft

i'm going to put a high lift camshaft into my engine with a 3.1 crankshaft, do you guys know if i need a custom programmed chip? also i checked the casting numbers in the 2.8 and 3.1 connecting rods, they are the same. so all i need to do is replace 1 because i spun a bearing and it screwed the rod, and my crank got worn down some as well, thats why i'm going to move up to a 3.1 crank.
