    OK I know this is a little off color for here- but I have a Porsche 914- mid engine that I want to put a 60 degree in to replace the flat 4 that comes orginaly- My question is: What engine would you use in this car(60 degree)
    I want to have good performance and be rock solid dependable so I thought that a Chev engine would be the best- I know that the V-8 is the one used a lot but I don't want to do that- I want to use the V-6

    SSSSOOOO- let me hear what you think would be the best engine to use!!!

    haha I like the name.

    Anyway, for power I would go with a 3400 or a 3500 and a stand alone engine management system. For rock solid no worries a 3400 with the metal felpro lower intake gasket would make sure it never leaks. The 3500 they don't have metal gaskets for so it would eventually fail over the years.

    They are dependable engines as long as you don't let the lower intake gasket leak and take out the motor. Mine has 200,000 miles on it with original heads on down. Only replaced the timing chain and swapped intake manifolds for more power. I've replaced the intake gasket twice, and now I have the all metal one on so I never have to worry again.

      not to far off color, lots of people here have 60 degree motors swapped into non gm things. one guy was putting a 3400 in a toyota motorhome, another has a custom built 3 wheeler (dubbed"minus one") with a 3100 and individual throttle body intake.

      back to your question, it realy depends on what you are looking for power and induction wise. if you want it carbed your stuck with a gen 1 ironhead, ranging from 110-160hp stock, but hard to get more than 180-ish hp out of without boosting it. if you are going efi, then a 3400 would be the best choice. very plentiful in the junkyards and the aftermarket is starting to really come around for them. a 3500 is another option, one member has one running n/a, 273 wheel hp.

      it really depends what you are looking for.

          I think the more wise choice would be a Subaru F4 or F6 engine. It will be much easier to fit in the Porsche and a lot of companies make adapters for the trans axle. The engine is all aluminum and much more compact so the weight bias will stay nearly the same on the car and it will probably handle a hell of a lot better at 60MPH. I love the 660 and it is the best V6 for FWD and front engine RWD vehicles that have the engine compartment designed for a V shaped engine. Also it is a great replacement for an I4 motor because of its compact design. But I don't think it is as well suited for an F4 replacement.

            Like wise, fitment was my concern also, since the original application is a flat motor. What I have seen is a Porche 928 converted to the 749 ecm used in the Syclone/Typhoon and then supercharged. So in addition to the favorable engines GM also has a number of hacked computers to do the job.

              Here's a question: what's the gearing on the transmission like, and are there other ratios available? If you want something that's really fun to drive, that's an essential part of the equation.

                how much power are you looking for? the subie swap is a good one if you can pull it off correctly... also, what are your cooling plans? how fast would you like to spin the engine? where would you like your power to be?

                honestly, im greatly against v8 swaps as it throws off the balance the car has far to much but there are more than a few other swaps for your chassis that will work great
