Hey all, new guy here wondering what you think of swapping a 3400 from a '96 MC z24. The car is cheap because the engine smokes so a quick rebuild is in order and hopefully only the heads - I'll find out tomorrow when I check the car out. Otherwise is this a bad donor and if so what are some better choices?

there is no such thing as a monte carlo z24, it would be a z34. also, it has a 3.4l twin dual cam (or dohc if you preffer) not a 3400. the 3.4l twin dual cam is a next to impossible swap in a j/l/n body, 2 people have tried and both given up, the motor is physicaly too big to fit in the engine bay.

Go for a newer low mileage 3400. You have a 96 so you can get a power tuner and tune to get maximum power out of it. Add a cam first before you throw it in for extra power or 3500 top end.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

my bad. Lumina's = z24 right?
never did like MC's. you saved
me a lot of time 'cause I was
headed over to the guy's house
tomorrow in the afternoon.
anyway, here's the ad if anyone wants a cheap Monte and lives in or near Vegas
Otherwise the 3100 in the Beretta is seized - I bought
it like that for $60.00. Body is good and has 107K.
FYI I also own an '89 GTU. Looking to do the swap
but I'd settle on a good 3100 for now.

No, luminas were Z34 too. The Z24 is cavaliers.
Finding a good 3100 might be hard, since they all have a lot of miles or seized up from not fixing lower intake gasket leaks. A 3400 is not that big of a deal to swap over. Just a few odds and ends are different. There is a thread in the performance section and another about two malibus swaping over all the stuff applies read through there.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)
