  • Help with accy brackets, please.

As some of you know, I am trying to swap some 3500 heads into my Firebird. I need help with some P/S and A/C bracket/location ideas. I'm not getting any love from my friends at the f-body site, so I thought maybe you guys could help out.

The alt has enough room on the pass side, but trying to stuff the P/S, A/C and forwrd facing headers is proving to be tough. I thought about moving the A/C to the other side, but the offset of the head on the pass side is going to make it easier to keep the two accys there.

I started mocking up the alt bracket with plexi-glass to bring to the shop and cut on the CNC mill, is there another compressor or pump that I can get from another car to save some room? Here is a pic of what I have so far.

Can the PS going between the alt and the TB? Maybe a 3x00 style pump is smaller? How about the PS between TB and AC?

I went to the JY today and saw a prospective P/S pump. It was from a Acura Integra (I think it was Integra). The pump was smaller than my pulley, the pulley was smaller, used the same size/style belt, AND there is an external resivoir - the most tempting part. This would mean I could keep the current A/C compressor. I also saw a couple of GM compressors that were smaller in diameter, but deeper (longer), and has the same fittings as the my compressor. This means if I grab the P/S pump, and it doesn't allow enough room, I can get the compressor as well (expensive, though).

The 3x00 pumps are as big as the one I have now.

Ah good deal. The integra pump just make sure that it spins at the right speed and not too slow or too fast, since the pulleys are all different.

A GM Type II PS pump (3X00) with a remote reservoir may work for you since they are fairly compact. You can modify it to remote reservoir by removing the stock reservoir and installing a press-in fitting for the return line.

As long as the ratio is the same, they should work. I just did a quick walk-through at the yard, didn't even bring a tape measure.

Thanks! For $100 new from Summit isn't bad, either. Do you know what years they came out of? I looked at the 3x00 pumps, but like I said, I didn't go taking anything apart. I could try to tap/thread a fitting in a stock unit, but it might just be worth spending the extra $60 and have it ready to go.

Yeah you'd have to measure and compare the ratio of the crank and PS pulleys and compare to your setup.

Hmm didn't know the 3x00 pump would get that small if taken apart like that. Looks like the way to go.

I looked at another JY today. They have a '99 Sunfire 3100, and it has that pump, in really good shape. They said I could have the pump along with 4th Gen F-Body seats (front and rear) for $140. I don't think I can pass it up.

I thought you said over at TGO that the PS bracket could be notched to work. Or is it because of your set-up that it wont work?

The stock bracket will work by enlongating some holes (on the 3500 heads), but will be in the way of my new headers . I asked you for those measurements for the people who want to use a 2.8/3.1 block.
