  • Differences in 2.8/Camaro 3.4/3100/3400's?

    Hey,
I'm new to the forum here. I have an 85 Fiero GT and want to do a quick budget swap of a 3.1 or 3.4 V6 into my car (holding over for either a Turbo TDC, L67 or LS4, I hate commitment ).

One of the Fiero forum members did a Camaro 3.4 swap into his car, using the Fiero intake/exhaust/wiring/mounts and what not. The only real differences was the starter needed to be relocated (it was an automatic 3.4 going into a manual Fiero).

What are the differences between the Fiero's 2.8 and, say, a 3.1 from a 94 Grand Am? or the later 3400's? What would the differences in mounts be? Programming? Wiring? Just curious as a junkyard in the city has many 3.1/3.4s lying around, and would be able to grab one for well under $200.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    JT

87+ fwd vehicles are a gen 2 or 3 engine. they use aluminum heads and would not be compatable with your intake setup. complicating matters is the fwd intake will not clear a fiero distributor, so you would have to use dis ignition, and that means computer tuning or a wiring harness/ecm swap. the motor would bolt right in though

the quickest and easyest swap would be the camaro 3.1 or 3.4l. either motor would bolt right in, intakes bolt up, everything just pluggs right in, the only change needed is the starter relocation.

      Thanks!
It looks like the investment into getting a Camaro motor is worth the price of admission, if that's the route I choose.

If the 3.4 is used, it has provisions for DIS. There is a trigger on the crank and mounting location for the sensor. I am currently putting together the parts for a 3.4/3500 hybrid. If you are on a budget, start with a long block JY swap. Then I would suggest looking into a top end swap later. While you have the motor out, a re-grind cam can be had from Delta for around $60 (260 adv dur).
