  • 97 olds silhouette 3.4 engine swap

    Hi
Would Like To Swap out the 97 3.4 In My Olds Silhouette To A 3.4 Out Of A 2005 Grand Am. Will They Interchange? I Have Been Told That The Intake, Oil Pan, And Timing Cover Are Different, But Will They Interchange?
    Need Help!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks, Michael2418

Why swap if you already have one in there? Is it crapping out on you and you need to replace it?

Engine Has 121k Miles On It And Looks Like Oil Changes Had Not Been Done In Quite A While. Engine Lost All Oil Pressure. Damaged #one Main Bearing. All Cam Bearings. Damaged Cam And Timing Chain When Cam Retaining Plate Broke So Engine Is A Mess. Found An 'o5 3.4 Out Of Grand Am With Less Than 11k Miles And Wanted To Change Out Save Some Time And Money But Every One Said That '97 3.4 Were Different Than The Rest Of The Years. Has Anyone Ever Installed A Newer Engine In A '97 Olds Silhouette?

not sure why the 1997 would be different. The 3400 came out in like 1996.

It might have something different with the sensors. You would probably have to swap out all of the sensor.

Another issues you might have is the camshaft. You will probably want to get a 1997 camshaft. Not sure if it is an issue, but I think there was a change with the CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR reluctor ring (trigger).

Someone will have to verify that, but I know the ring on my 1999 3100 was different than the one on my friends 2000 3400. The grinds were the same, so we were thinking that it was a YEAR CHANGE.

It has been said that if you use the matching Cam Position Sensor to the cam being used (basically retaining the 2005 Cam Position Sensor), that the ECM will see the signal it needs.

i don't think so, but then again, I have not tried it.

Seems to me that with the signals being reversed, you might need the pcm.

The cam position sensor is a hall effect similar like the crank position. The older cam has a ring with a raised part (magnetic signal when raised part moves past cam sensor). Newer cam has a raised ring with a NOTCH (solid signal until notch, then creats a gap where signal is lost for cam signal).

Not sure how the sensor would respond to it.

The sensor is set up for the cam. The sensor converts the signal to a square wave for the PCM. So no matter what cam you use, as long as you use the sensor for that cam, then the PCM will get the exact same signal.

That's what I was trying to say.

                  Thanks For The Help!!!!
What About The Engine Mounts? The 97 Has Two Mounts From The Core Support To The Heads. The Newer Engines Have Only One To The Core Support And One From The Timing Cover To Strut Tower. Does The Newer Engine Have The Mounting Provisions For The Second Mount From The Front Of Engine To The Core Support?

yes, just swap over the mounts and anything else external that may be different, such as the throttle boday linkage, easier to just swap the entire TB, since you have to remove it from the engine anyway, due to the different bracket and actuation between the U-van and car, little things like that.

Not sure but I would imagine the casting would be the same with the bolt holes. Different vehicles had different mounts. Grand Am IIRC only has side mount like my 3100. The larger cars got the 2 or 1 core support mounts.

You might have to swap a few things and keep them like your LIM (or tap/thread the 2005 to fit your screw in fitting), and the UIM you can re-use your's so the EGR bolts up.
