  • Aluminum heads

    Hello

I have a 2.8 mpfi from a 1988 Chevrolet Camaro. I'm going to be stuffing it into my Chevette, and so I want to make it as light as possible. Is it possible to mount the 2nd Generation Aluminum heads on this longitudinal engine?

    Thanks
    Herbie

Yes, you can put any heads on there up to the 3400. If you are going to use a distributor, it may be an issue for the intake manifolds.

Thanks. The engine is from a 1988 Camaro, with mpfi. I think that's the LB8 engine code.

The block is not the problem when it comes to using a dizzy, even the FWD blocks will accept a dizzy, the issues is intake manifold clearance. The rear most runner gets in the way with both the genII and genIII lower intakes. There are no aftermarket intake manifolds for these engines. You will have to build a custom intake manifold to use a dizzy, or a custom dizzy.

I can't recall the members name, but he is quite active here and will probably see this thread, but he installed a genII into his 'Vette and modified the intake to clear the dizzy and use a carb.

Pardon my ignorance, as I am still new to these engines, and have not yet picked it up. But what ignition system is currently on that engine? Presumably, whatever ignition system is on that engine should work with it just fine. Even if I need to build another MegaSquirt.

Distributor, so yes, it will work just fine if you keep the iron heads.

Alright, thanks guys for the replies. It's tough to visualize unless I have the engine right in front of me. I guess what I was asking was, can I replace the Cast Iron Heads on there with Aluminum ones, and keep the intake manifold and injection system intact.

              LIke this set:

No, the genI intake will not mate to the genII/III heads.

Thanks Raven, that's what I'm looking for.

i'd convert it to MPFI with a FWD 3.1 engine harness/computer and run a 3400 top end (heads/lower intake and upper intake).

you could probably use the 7x external crank trigger that Ben sells in the store with some creative pully swapping. that would net you about 50 lbs lighter and quite a bit more power.

Thanks Superdave. Height is an issue as I want to keep the hood stock. I like the sleeper idea. As for pulleys, the car doesn't have power steering or A/C. All I need is a v-groove pulley to the alternator so all accessories will come off.

It would probably sit lower with a fuel injected setup. It's been a while since i've seen a carbbed '660 in person though... lol
