  • Converting 86 S10 TBI to MPFI

Some of you know I have a spun rod bearing in my Firebird 3.1. I found a solid 2.8 TBI from an 86 S10, and was wondering what would be needed to convert it so I can keep my MPFI?

Actually to be more specific tell me if I am missing something :

    use the 2.8 flywheel

use the 3 piece manifold from the MPFI, will it bolt to the gen1 heads?

oil pressure sender is on the block (2., not the oil filter adapter(3.1)

If I use the serp belt, do I need to use the 3.1 timing cover (reverse water pump)?

Any other sensors in a different location?

I know I am downgrading, but I'm not concerned about the performance at this point, just got to get the car working and I will build the hybrid out of the 3.1 block to put back in later.

    Yep. Due to external balance.

Your 3.1 is a genI. Yes use the MPFI intake.

oil pressure sender is on the block (2., not the oil filter adapter(3.1)
You'll have to use some sort of adaptor bushing, because I believe even the genI had the same change between the 2.8 to 3.1 as the genII, that being the 2.8 used a 1/8" NPT thread for the OPSU, where as the 3.1 uses a 1/4" NPT thread, or use a 2.8 OPSU that matches your requirements, gauge vs light.

If I use the serp belt, do I need to use the 3.1 timing cover (reverse water pump)?
Yes, but IIRC 1986 S-10 was serpintine belt as well, so there should be no need to swap the timing cover.

Any other sensors in a different location?
I believe you have a snesor in the passenger head at the rear that the S-dime won't, knock sensor maybe, but that's all I can think of, off the top of my head.

I know I am downgrading, but I'm not concerned about the performance at this point, just got to get the car working and I will build the hybrid out of the 3.1 block to put back in later.[/QUOTE]

The 3.1 oil pressure sender has 1/8"NPT (I know from the oil line to the turbo, I used a "t"). My 3.1 block has a cap where the 2.8 oil sender would be, so could I just use the filter adapter from the 3.1 or does the 2.8 adapter have an 1/8" cap where the 3.1 uses for the sender?

That sensor isn't the temp, I believe that is different on the 2.8?

Like I said, I wasn't sure, but thouht I had read that.

You will need to swap timing covers. The 86 used combo V and Serp belts.

Good call, I was just looking at an '86 at the wreckers today and noticed that.
I wasn't able to see the oil pan though, which style front seal does the '86 use?

Thanx guys. It's not imperative that I use the serp belt, but I want to have an idea of what I'm getting into. It's not so bad whan the stuff is in front of you, but this guy isn't returning my messages since I asked him some details about the rebuild (everyone has a "fresh rebuild" on the motor they are selling).

The change of the timing cover to use the serp belt os more of a water pump rotation switch, than a belt issue.

Yep, got that, that's why I mentioned it earlier. The TBI is a complete motor from intake to pan and accesories to flywheel. He is swapping a V8 in it's place.

EDIT: Actually that reminds me that I never asked if it were an auto, if it's a stick I'll have to find a 2.8 FW.
