  • Need Some More Advice

I just wanted to get a few more opinions on what I should do, since I have a couple options. All of them will get me to my HP goal (around 240 - 300 crank horse), but I just wanted to get opinions.

Keep my 3100 - It will probably need a bit of work (with 150000 miles), but its still in good working order and this may be the easiest route

Swap to a 3.4 DOHC - I have currently have one in my parts car, I am unsure of the state it is in (though the seller said it ran, just no spark from the plugs). It will probably need a rebuild as well. The issue with this is it isn't OBDII, although I heard it can be converted. The other problem I hear about is that the engine is a pain to work on. This would also be easier than the others since I won't have the expense of buying the engine outright.

Swap to a 3400 - More HP stock but may end up with similar mileage.

Swap to a 3500 - There are a few without VVT available in my area with low mileage, but I hear this may be a difficult swap.

Swap to a 3800SC - This is a very tantalizing option because of the aftermarket and the stock HP it puts out. However the major issue; I have looked around for these engines, and most have been high mileage. Generally speaking these engine probably have been beaten to hell by their owners (they are designed to perform after all). I also think this can be overdone, and I wouldn't mind trying something different, although opening the hood of my Lumi and showing off the engine to unsuspecting people would be fun.

All input is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I'd swap to a non VVT 3500, I'm not sure how your motor mounts are setup but if i can make the '91 cavalier mounts work i'm sure you can make 3100 mounts work.

i would go with the 3.4l dohc. stock is 210hp, with a few things like a cam timing change, exaust, intake, ect you can be upwards of 240hp. you could fina a wiring harness from a monte carlo with the 3.4l dohc as they are obd2.

if you want to go with a pushrod motor, the only way you will meet your power goals and have a streetable car is if you turbo it. in that case, grab a 3400, turbo it, and with 8-10psi intercooled on a stock motor you should hit close to 300hp and still have a relaible car. however this route means lots of custom work. if your able to weld exaust tubing and have time and pacients, it should be no problem.

I could also do a 3100/3400/3500 hybrid. I recall reading somewhere that the 3400 heads will fit onto the 3100, and I could get 3500 UIM and LIM. Correct me if I am wrong on that one.

As for the 3.4 DOHC, I'm not entirely sure about that engine. Its tempting to do, but I have heard that they are a pain to work on. I also know the guy that owned it before, and he liked to street race so I don't know if the engine is ok.
