Just out of curiousity .. The 4.6L is a 90 degree engine, correct? Also, is the alternator in the same shitty spot the 3.4L DOHC is in ? Also, were they RWD or FWD ?
The alt is I think in a decent spot, the bad part is were the starter is; under the intake between the heads!
I guess the starter is one of those things that you dont need to replace usually anyway.
I don't know where you've been, but it's kinda one of those Hi-wear components like alternators and shit. Especially when you sandwich it between all that heat. Could they have put it in a hotter spot? "I think that would really take some serious GM engineering to pull off." But hell they never learned a thing from the alternator on the 3.4 at all. So what can we expect?

What I was trying to say was, something like, its not a part you replace yearly .. At least I havent. Its not like a part that dies every 20,000 miles. I dont know what they could take sandwhiched there, but GM couldnt put it there if it wasnt gonna last. Idunno .. its 2:45AM .. not sure if I know whut Im talkin bout rite now ..
Doin some more thinking about this .. How much bigger can a L67 be than a 4.6L northstar? Reason I asked was because of www.l67swap.com where they put that POS in a 96 W body ..

Makes me wonder .. Anyone ?
I've seen a L67 in a Pre-98 Cutlass and there was alot of room, almost as much as the stock 3100!
I inquired about this topic around 6 months ago, and got shot down. Somebody on this forum measured the NorthStar and said the width and height was too much, partially due to the tranny attached to it and said the only way to get it in, would be chopping up the frame .. Just letting you know of what I heard, and by no means trying to discourage you ..
I would definately attempt it if I knew a 5spd would mate to it, cause I highly doubt my GETRAG 284 would just bolt right to it .. Good Luck ..
Actually, if you had an auto and a manual DOHC car sitting in front of you, you would find out that the 284 is wider then the auto. It actually sticks out under the body frame rail, or the unibody frame I guess you could call it. And no, I'm not talking about the subframe.

HUH? I said I thought I remembered hearing that the auto tranny attached to the northstar is to big for the engine compartment .. I never said the 284 is bigger/small than the 4t60e .. only reference I made to the 284 was I wish it would mate to a Northstar, cuz I didnt think they came in sticks?

Or maybe I confused myself ..
Well isn't the 282 basically the same size/dimentions as the 284? So if the 284 is going to hang out almost into the wheel well, so will the 282. Maybe I missunderstood what you said, but what I thought you meant was you would like to bolt your 284 to a N*. It's not like it's impossible, as I am sure that the fiero guys have adapters for bellhousings for N*'s to fit them to a 282, which means that a 284 could then bolt up too since the two trannies have the same bolt pattern. I don't know what other 5 speed tranny most fiero guys would use for such a swap.
