  • 3.1 block

i just recently built a 2.8, and i guess there must have been an oversite or something because it ran terribly( coolant leaking into cylinders) i think the longest i let it run was 20 minutes. i pulled the engine and found a crack in the block.

i have a 3.1 block, would it be possible just to swap everything into that block. i was thinking just to get a new set of mains and a gasket set. i should be able to reuse the rings and rod bearings right?

theres not any issues with using a 2.8 bottom end in a 3.1 block? or using the front cover and oil pan? i plan on using my 2.8 heads and intake too since this i need it to be a TBI setup.

Parts will swap in fine, just make sure the bores are matched to the pistons, as in, if you have overbore pistons, you'll need to bore the block, sssuming that it hasn't been bored previously.

and your compression will stay the same at 8.77:1, according to the CR calculator. if i'm taking all that apart and reassembling it, might as well use a 3.1 crank with a longer stroke and raise the CR to 9.6:1. assuming the pin heights are the same in both the 2.8 and 3.1 pistons. wouldn't that be nice?

Compression distance (pin hight) is not the same between 2.8 and 3.1 pistons.

thought so, but not for sure. what about piston dish sizes, aren't those different?

Yes, slightly, the 3.1 has slightly larger dish.

yeah looking at the pistons, they have a 10 stamped on the top, i havent measured the cylinders yet but i think it would be odd to bore an engine only 10 over? as for the 3.1 crank, trashed, lots of scorches and knicks all over it, i got the 3.1 from my automotives class so the engine has been takin apart numerous times and the only thing i feel safe using from it is the block.
