  • Engine Swap Complete Question about ECM

Hi all. I don't really post on here often however I hear a lot of good things about this site from my good friend Lorenzo C (GPSE3400). Anyways here is a brief story:

My gf/myself own a 1997 Buick Skylark Gran Sport Coupe (pretty rare from what I am told) that orginally had a 3100 sfi in it. To make a long story short after repairing the lower intake manifold gaskets for the second time in it's life it spun the journal one day on my way home from work about this time last year The good news is having been around these engines for a while now, and with some help from Lorenzo we managed to get a 3400 from a 00 grand am gt to plop in there with the 3100 injection and computer. After the swap it ran like a top with only minor driveability issues such as a rough idle on cold startup or long cranking when the engine is hot. Either way not a show stopper and the increase in power was noted immediately.

Fast forward to last weekend. We decided to get some 3400 injectors out of a 98 Chevy Venture minivan and try using a 97 computer from a pontiac transport minivan to control this. From what we know this works all well and dandy in the W-platform however when we hook up the computer the car started perfect, idled civil and even goes in and out of gear. The problem was I had no tach signal, the Theft light is on and the battery light is also on. Now I have not driven this vehicle yet to see if it shifts correctly but I don't see why it would not.

In a feable effort to get things worked out I went back to yard and swapped out the 97 Transport ECM for a 96 out of an Oldsmobile Sillouette. Hooked it up and got the same results as above.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this kind of ecm swap in their N bodies and if you have could you provide me some information on what the differences are between my factor wiring on the skylark and that of the minivan. Or if you could just get me some wiring diagrams or the ECM pinout for the olds van and the skylark ecms I could probably figure out the differences and swap the wires around.

If there is anything I am overlooking please feel free to let me know. Thanks for the help in advance.

hey kenny. Long time no see.

Larry told me about the 3100, and I got to thinking if that socket had something to do with it

      LOL

I heard something about the newer PCM's having some minor differances between the 4T60-E cars/minivans, and the 4T65-E minivans, but 1996 tells me the silhouette should have had the 4T60-E.

I don't have the skylark or minivan wiring, but I might have the newer wiring diagram somewhere. I have a 1999 Grand Am book, but that is the 4T40-E and 4T45-E.

I will compare the wiring of that to my 1996 Grand Prix wiring and see what I can tell ya. If nothing else, it might help me see something.

Why not get a programmer for the one that just idled rough and long hot start?

Kenny, I did the research, and found some of the differences. PM me your email address and I will send you the results.

Just so you know, the tach signal is one of the differences...

Thanks man. I looked at a diagrams a few weeks ago, the main differences are the tach, charge indicator lamp and charging signal. Brian says if I get another 96 3100 computer he might be able to reprogram the engine managment information. I was not too crazy about rewiring the skylark harness. Let me know if you have any other ideas. PM sent.

It looks like the rewiring is going to be MINIMAL. Mostly the 3400 has a couple of things ADDED, and only like 2 or 3 wires that were in different locations.

I emailed the info to you.
