I posted this over on beretta.net and haven't gotten any responses yet so I figured I'd throw it up on here and maybe some of you could help. I know some of the stuff might be specific to this swap in a beretta only, but any help is appreciated.
I'm getting ready to swap a 3400 into my 95 OBDI Z26. After reading the 3400swap.com guide and looking around on beretta.net and 60degree v6 I still have a few questions. For reference, my donor engine is from a 2002 grand am.
1. Fuel Injectors
This seems to be a highgly debateable topic. So far I've read that the 3400 injectors will run too rich, or on the other hand that they'll be fine as long as I use the 3400 regulator and fuel rails. Most of the swaps that I've read about have used the 3100 injectors, rails, and regulators. I'd definitely like to use the 3400 stuff if I can, being that it has 12k miles on it compared to 150k on my 3100 stuff. I know if I do that I will have to redo my injector harness for the 3400 injector connectors, which is no problem in my mind. However, will this run too rich on my stock 3100 computer?
2. EGR
I know that everyone that has done this swap so far has either blocked off the egr or used an adapter plate on a 97-99 upper manifold. If I have to I will take this route. However, I'm pretty sure my new engine will include the 2002 egr (I won't have the engine till tomorrow). Is there any way to adapt this egr electrically to my OBDI system? It doesn't seem like anyone has tried this so I guess I would be the guinea pig. Although, being that I haven't looked at the two egr's side by side yet, maybe theres an obvious reason it won't work? If anybody has ideas on this or advice it'd be greatly appreciated. It'd be great if I didn't have to buy an adapter plate and a new upper intake.
3. Exhaust & Manifolds
I know that the position/angle on the rear 3400 manifold means it won't bolt up to my current downpipe. Of course I'd like to use the 3400 manifold since it flows better. My question is will I have problems with heat and my steering rack if I do? I intend to call an exhaust shop before I do this and see how much it would cost to just make a new downpipe and connect it to my current exhaust. It doesn't seem like it should be too much. Also, I remember reading that it would be easier for the exhaust shop if I had the downpipe from a 3400 car, then they could just attach this to my exhaust. Is this true?
4. Coolant Pipes/Heater Core Hoses
In reading the 3400 swap guide, it says to use one heater core hose from the 95 and one from the 99+ grand am. Now this of course deals with a 95 grand am. Is the same true for a beretta? In other words, could I use one of my current hoses and then the other one from my 2002 grand am engine? Also, the coolant line that attaches to the top of the waterpump housing (the one with the bleeder valve across the front of the engine, right above the valve cover) is currently messed up on my car. The bleeder screw is completely stripped out. In other words, I'm hoping that this isn't the line from 95 that I need. If it is, what is the part number so that I can order a new one? If this is the one that I'm supposed to use off the 99+ than hopefully my new engine will include it.
