    Hello,
Instead of starting a new new thread I'll add on to this one for background. So I have the 3.1 #981 crank and have a line on a set of 3.1 pistons for cast iron heads. Can I use 2.8 rings on these or 3.1 rings for the specific piston?

They will be the same rings.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at some 2.8 rings vs 3.1 rings and ring #2 is .5mm wider than #2 in a 3.1 set, also the oil ring groove is larger in the 2.8. That aside, my machinist informed me that my donor engine had been rebuilt(which I figured) and it's .040 over. I was thinking of using new .040 over 3.1 pistons and not reboring. I've done this before with sbc's and 229 v6's w/o any trouble. The machinist, of course, at $16 a hole, recommended against not reboring. But I would have to go at least to .060.

Why is he suggesting 060? Is 040 not enough to true up the bores?

If I were doing it I would do the minimal amount to clean it up. This way you preserve the wall thiickness and improve reliability.

Sounds to me like its already 40 over, so to true up the bores, he'd have to go to 60 over.

Bores look great, I'm going to stick a new set of .040 3.1's in there and go for it.

I've got my block tanked now and magnafluxed and have the 3.1 pistons and rings. I'm looking to re-con my rods but all the machinists in my area want $160 to do it, that's with stock bolts. I can get rods here http://www.engine-parts.com/GMV6/gmv6ps1.html with stock bolts for a $100 and with ARP bolts for $60 more.

One more thing I been thinking about is the 3.1 pistons are dished. The stock 2.8 pistons were not. How much is the dished pistons going to drop my compression? I'm .040 overbore, with stock TBI S10 iron heads. The pistons are H562CP with recess .105X2.913.

I made a reply to this last night.

The dish is there in the 3.1 piston to retain the same static compreesion as teh 2.8. Remember static compression ratio is the difference of volume between piston at BDC to TDC.
As long as that is an iron head piston, the SCR will be about 8.9:1 IIRC.

Thanks for the reply. I got all my parts lined up now and I'm ready for assembly. I asked you guys all the questions I can think of. Thanks alot for your cumulative knowledge.
