  • 95 3100 swap for 00 3100

My 95 Pontiac Grand Am GT is approaching 155,000 miles. The past 20,000 miles it has picked up valve noise (ticking) which is increasing. It also lays down at about 4500 RPM and even feels like it is missing. I have a magnetic drainplug and have also noticed shavings. I believe that the cam/lifters are on the way out. I find it really disappointing because I have used Mobil 1 oil since new with regular changes. The car still gets great gas milage and doesn't use a drop of oil between changes.

I can pick up a used 99-02 3100 with low miles (25,000-35,000 miles) from Malibus and Grand Prix SE as well as Centurys for a great price...much less (1/2 price) then the prices I am getting from remanufactures.

I have researched and discovered that the engines are similar but different. How much difficulty would it be to swap in the newer 3100?

    Thanks
    Jake
