  • Haltech E6k Help

Hello we are installing a E6k using a 96 dohc engine we seem too be blowing our Alternators had to replace two units both new. Does the e6k send a higher signal than the stock GM ecu? Thanks to Ben for his help you have been great, Norm

The plug with usually 2 brown wires (around 18 guage) on the back side of the alternator, is it hooked up? One of those wires goes to an IGN + and controls the voltage regulator.

Im going to come back up sometime this week. I can at least finish up the spark tables now that we have that under control. Ill see if I can get a data log off jon's car so we have a closer injector ms load time for some of the RPM/MAP values as well.

I wasn't aware that it was blowing the alternators out though. It could be wiring somehow. The IAC was wrong, as was the fuel wiring so its quite possible that something else is setup wrong which is messing with the alt. I can bring my grand prix book with the wiring diagrams just in case, since its basically using a 91-93 wiring setup with the multiport injection and MAP sensor.

We have the IAC working. I reversed all the wires and did it the exact opposite, and it seems to function correctly so far. As far as the alternator goes, the 96 only has one wire in that plug as apposed to two. I have it wired to a +12v switched source. It is in no way hooked up to the haltech as previously stated. In the manual I have, it shows that wire going to the ECM. I am not sure why, maybe it also contains a signal of some sort with that 12v supply.
        Thank you, Brian

I have a question. Why use a Haltech E6K and not an E6GM? I may be doing a different computer in the future and just wondering why you went with that one.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

I dunno about the E6K or anything from Haltech, since they are now running there support out of australia, but I got the FAST Bank to Bank system and besides the coil pack type ignition, it was all labeled and basically real easy to wire up. I ran the engine on a dyno and had no problems. There tech support will help you through 100% and you wont have that out of the country long distance bill..... Not bad either, so far has been real easy to save files and bring them back up and edit.

We went through the stock wiring setup for the 96 DOHC engine and found some changes between it and the 91-95 setup that dohcfiero.com uses (I hope thats what they used). The IAC works flawless now, as does the O2 sensor which was a big help for idle (once it was set to not try to run the O2 at 1 volt....hahaha). I think the wiring is good now, it was just an issue of the 96/97 sensors not being the same as the wiring Brian was going off of originally.

I also put in some of the stock GM settings like the battery voltage offset for the injectors and that crap. Have a few more to go and then it should be all set for tuning later on on the road. I will put a copy of the file up on the site once its more complete, since the engine its on is stock right now.

Side note, on the fly tuning kicks so much ass over burn a chip, test, pull chip, repeat. Other note, Haltech has a message board with good support as well so unless you need to talk to someone on the phone, I think their service is pretty good as well.

Yeah, it could be good, I dont doubt its good, they want to sell a product, they need to be able to help you with it. But you would need 2 computers to do this then, I'd think. One to talk to them and the other to work on the E6K. I only had a problem getting the ignition going, I called them up and said hey I need help, they pulled there screen up and said do this do that and wala. Not even 5 mins and I never had to take my eyes off what I was doing. Not bad, not bad... And engine went Vroooom...... and it idled it self down.

                  Ben,
Did you get the base map up on the site yet? I am working on getting my IAC working with my E6GM, and it would be helpful to see what settings you guys used.

                  Thanks,
                  Marty
