  • Issues with Powrtuner

I recently purchased a used powrtuner with the 2.8 firmware. It came with a cd with the 1.2.4 software, the keyspan adapter, associated cables, and a spare pcm. I've had it since the middle of August and due to an issue with the registration form on gmv6pcm, I've been unable to register to the forum. I've talked with Steven through several help tickets and he's trying to help me get an account. Even though I don't have access to the forum, a friend of mine created a thread for me over there pertaining to this particle topic.

Now that I've gotten through the background info, on to my problem. I have a 2004 Monte Carlo 3400. I can read the pcm just fine. I can also read my DHPv1.0 pcm. However, I cannot write to either one of those pcms without getting an error. I can start the write process and I get to step 17 when it fails and gives me the error message. The error states: error: 255 severity: 2, Mode 34 Unauthorized Access.

I DLed a bin file for a 2005 Impala 3400 from this site. I was able to write it to a spare pcm just fine. Once a security learn was done, the car ran fine. I tweaked some things in the Impala file (basically some trans settings, raised rev limiter, and fuel cut off points) and tried to load it to the car. Failure again with the same error.

Over the past week, I logged a bit and used the table modifier to create a new MAF table. I imported the MAF table and went out to load the file into the car. That's when I bricked my first pcm. The PT started to write the file and about halfway through it started over again only to fail. Every attempt to salvage the pcm resulted in a message about the PT not recognizing the PCM or OSID and that a full write was necessary. Upon attempting a full write, I got the same message and the cycle would start all over again.

Frustrated, I installed my stock pcm. I did a read of the pcm to make sure everything was cool. That worked fine. I did a mass import of the fuel, spark, and transmission tables from my Impala file. After saving the file, I attempted to write the file to my pcm. I got the error at step 17 a couple of times and on my last try, it started writing. About 85% through the write, it started over with the write process. This happened about 3 times before it finally wrote to the pcm completely. I waited a minute and finally started the car.

I'm a little worried about my problem as I only have two pcms now. And I have no idea if one of them will brick the next time I go to write to it.

Also, where in the heck is the CASE learn feature in the program? I couldn't find it to save my life. I had to use my Aeroforce Scangauge to do it because I absolutely couldn't find it.

P.S. I also have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS with the 3800 motor. I have no problems writing to the pcm in it.

What file are you trying to download to the PCM? The read PCM file or the Impala file?

It happens with any file. The impala file loaded when I used a pcm that wasn't native to the car. I've tried to load my stock file, my dhp 1.0, and the impala file. All attempts cause the error to come up. The only time it worked perfectly was when I used the pcm that was from another vehicle. But wheb I attempted to write to it again, I got the same error as with the other pcms.

I don't know. Personally I've never used the USB keyspan adapter, but many guys on that forum have.

What settings do you have it on as far as write speed and other options?

The other option I could suggest is going with a previous version, such as 1.2.3E. I heard about some problems with 1.2.4 so in effort to keep my hardware running correctly, I never upgraded to it.

Well for one, you don't try to run PCM files from cross platform vehicles. If you have an MC then stay with MC files. Now do you have a 04 MC file from the PT website? If you don't and the file isn't on the PT site. Then it is a good possbility that your file has not been mapped in the PT software. That would cause your problems. I tried checking the PT site but it is currently down.

Ok, that is a pretty good lead. I don't have an 04 MC file from the powrtuner forum. Steven sent me an 04 MC 3800 bin file. I assumed that the Impala file was ok to use since it is the same powertrain. And my stock pcm, when read by the powrtuner comes up as an 04 Impala LA1. The same thing goes for my DHP 1.0 pcm. It reads as an 04 Impala LA1. It even has the same OS ID as my stock pcm.

Steven should be getting back to me in a day or so with my access to the PT forum. After that, I should have some more freedom to snoop around over there.

With regards to the comment about the Keyspan adapter: I can pretty much rule out the adapter as being the issue because I use it when I tune my 01 3800 and it works flawlessly.

I have a screen capture of the error. I can upload it once I get back from the doctor if anyone thinks it would help.

I figured it out guys. It was my PAC AUX input adapter on the radio. I unplugged it from the back of the stock radio and pulled power from it. I hooked up the PT and attempted to load a file to the pcm. It started writing without any problems at all.

Thanks again for all the help.
