  • Anyone in RI area w $8F/5 speed experience?

I'm trying to properly retune my TSTE for having a Getrag 282, Crane H260 cam and Ford C302 (yellowtop) injectors. The motor's just a rebuilt 3.1. I've been using TunerPro RT with Ostrich 2.0. I don't have a wideband (I know, that's my first problem). But I'm trying to at least get idle/vacuum driving tuned without much luck.

I kinda need somebody with some experience that might be able to spot other problems that need to be fixed prior to tuning. I've spent a lot of time trying to retune the fuel tables, first by finding a happy BPC then by tuning the RPM & vacuum fuel tables (I've also tried messing with nAst1, but don't want to delve any further into it at this point). I think I may have some voltage problems too, so I'm going to try replacing ground/power cables and the alternator. I believe that I have the basic methodology down, but I want to make sure I'm at least going in the right direction, or for someone with a better 'feel' for this who might be able to give me a hand.

I'm in North Kingstown, RI. Car is currently not road capable (due to tuning) nor legal, but it can at least be driven around the neighborhood at low speed, for now.

    kthx.

I'm quite local to you but unfortunately I'm an OBDII guy so I'm not as familiar with speed density tuning.... The wideband will help you at WOT but you should be able to tune idle and part throttle without that.

The unfortunate thing about 8F is the inability to datalog and emulate at the same time so that you can use the cell follower to see where you are on the fuel map. After getting the BPC where it needs to be a good place to start would be with the idle fuel table. There is also a fuel delivery per inject value but I'm not sure if it is active (switched on) to respond to any changes in fuel injectors and I can't test it myself at the moment because my emulator is out for repair.

You may want to look into a hotwire kit for the fuel pump though, I follow my voltage in the datalog with a history table and it drops quite a bit under boost and that does affect fuel delivery.

I can emulate and datalog just fine with $8F... in fact I do use the cell follower.
I've pretty much been starting with the BPC and moving to the idle fuel table. I'm not sure if I should more or less leave the RPM table alone. The fuel delivery per inject value, I've tried changing a bit both with it supposedly enabled and disabled, I can't recall seeing that much of an effect, even with it set to something extreme.

Even my main battery voltage is a bit on the low side, so I'm going to try fixing any upstream problems first (i.e. main grounds/alt). But yea, I've definitely noticed what difference it can cause.

        Thanks for the insight.

I've never been able to emulate and datalog at the same time with the 8F code, A1 and code59 was not a problem. If you're able to do both at the same time I suspect you're not using the Moates APU1. Even with a low battery voltage reading a hotwire kit should produce a more consistent voltage with a direct link to the battery without parasitic feeds off the hotwire from other connections.

I see. I'll have a look into that then, thanks.

I am able to do both at the same time; I'm using Ostrich 2.0 and ALDU1/CABL1.

That explains it, you have two different modules working at the same time. I'd hate to have to buy the ALDU1 unit in order to log and emulate at the same time when the APU alone is capable, but I'm pretty comfortable with 8F now and am interested in running nast1 so I may have to make that investment, as being able to emulate and log at the same time is crucial in easing the tuning process.

I'm currently running in openloop because of a serious surging problem at idle with 60 lb/hr injectors in the 3900 and haven't dedicated the needed time to resolve it yet but as soon as I get my emulator back I'll work on it. It gets frustrating not knowing which fuel tables are active at certain times. I believe part of the trouble for me is not enough idle air flow so I've cracked the throttle a little more in hopes that will help when I reactivate closed loop.

You can't do both at the same time with the APU1? Wow that's a deal breaker. I had bought the ALDL cable long ago and only recently decided it was definitely work it/necessary to be able to emulate too (cause testing, tweaking, removing chip, reburning chip and replacing chip and retesting is for crazies ).

60 lb/hr O.O I guess that motor flows very well compared to the gen 2/3 motors.

I'm considering purchasing the ALDU1 in order to datalog while emulating, to my knowledge it's only 8F that does not emulate and log at the same time and that appears to be a problem with the code not the Autoprom as it emulates and logs A1 and code59 with no problem. What settings do you use in TP5 in order to emulate and log at the same time?

Nothing special, I think everything in TP5 in that area is still set to defaults.

Okay, I see I'll need to deselect autoprom and switch it to be recognized by TP for emulation so that when data link is pressed it'll recognize ALDU1 instead. Before I make that purchase it looks like I'll be buying a new 6 speed first as my F40 is failing. So much for stronger.

I know TunerPro can data log from emulation cable on AutoProm.. on some it seems you can't. But I have never even tried, I just hook up emulation cable and ALDL cable on everything!
