Tuning a 93 3.4 Firebird

  • ok cool. And if the adjustments are working over a couple of logs i should start to see those adjustment #'s getting closer and closer to .999 ?

    • assuming no human error or adjustment issues, yes, eventually you'll get to that area. keep in mind it will NEVER be a perfect 1.00 for very long due to a lot of variables, like humidity, sensor error, wear, etc...
      1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

      • cool beans man. I'm gonna try to do the "idle relearn" next time i go over to datalog since the eratic idle is starting to wear on my nerves. Also, i'm not 100% sure my fuel pressure is running at the 50psi that i set it for in the BPC so i'm going to do it the right way (by removing the vacuum hose) and set it to 50. It's probably only 1 or 2 psi off but if i want to be accurate i need to get it right at 50.

        • well that was a huge waste of time...

          took my newly burned chip over and i couldn't even get the car to start!!

          I think it's the battery thats doin it. I have to put it on charge every time i go over there.

          The one time i DID get it to start and i put it in Drive (for the idle relearn process) it just stalled out on me and died

          I coudln't even get it to idle so i could verify my fuel psi let alone do the whole "idle relearn" procedure.

          Solution: Buy a brand new battery (even though my funds are nilch) and 02 sensor, plug those in and see how my new tune works.

          I'm starting to wonder about these so called "19lb" injectors. It's running so rich it's unbelievable. Are they just stock 19lb? or are they something stupid like 19.9 that i don't know about?

          The engine seems to be drowning in fuel even when the battery is behaving.

          here's my latest .bin in case anyone wants to look at it and see if something doesn't look right. (attached)

          • should i just start over with the original .bin?? Or maybe wait til i get in the new battery and sensor to see if my newest changes have helped or made it worse?

            • once you have a battery that doesn't suck balls, then we'll see...

              • Assuming 19#hr @ 43.5psi running at 50psi = 20.371#/hr. Adjust stock BPC accordingly.

                    yeah i did that. I'm wondering if they are true blue 19lb. Maybe they are 19.5 or something and they just call em 19's?

                    either way, i'm going over now to put in the new battery/02 sensor.

                    John has failed to tell me which 02 sensor is being used so i'll have to do some investigative work lol

                    that will only involve me starting the car while logging and then disconnecting one of the o2 sensor wires until i see a flag come up... at least i think that will work.

                    edit: what is changing my IAC steps to 21 going to do for me?

                    double edit: I looked at the .bin and it was already at 25 steps... so don't change it then?

                    • changing the IAC initialization point retracts the IAC further, allowing more air to get into the engine without touching the throttle.

                      the GP is up to 41 ATM... the cam will certainly change things, but in this situation, it's probably better to have too much air, than not enough... at least to get it running right...

                      • I'm about to give up on this car....

                        Put in the new battery, it fired up for about 5 seconds... and then died.

                        Couldn't get it to start after that... Probably killed the new battery just trying.

                        Rich as shit. My oil is full of gas. I don't know what to do anymore.

                        Every "adjustment" I make just makes it worse. Every time i try to "cut fuel" it ends up being richer. Now my car won't even start.

                        John, I didn't think this was supposed to be so difficult? The car ran better with the obd 1.5 computer!!

                        That's where i'm at right now...

                        I couldn't tell which 02 sensor was being used since i couldn't even start the car to see when a flag went off. I couldn't adjust my fuel pressure because once again i couldn't start the car and now i have no idea what my psi is at. (it could be anywhere between 35-60 i literally have NO idea) I couldn't do any idle relearn because once again i couldn't get my car to start.

                        Solution?

                        Option 1: Change the oil/filter, replace both 02 sensors with new ones (unless John wants to make like Buddah and enlighten us), go back to the original tune (depressing isn't it) and then PAY one of YOU guys to make my adjustments from now on because apparently i can't hack it.

                        Option 2: Sell the car and get away while i still can!!!

                        • I would go back to the base tune and try to look at the items you are currently trying to look at (O2, fuel pressure, etc). No one ever said tuning was easy...

                          • Max, you can always swap the o2 sensors if you think that's the issue, but like I (and now Brad) told you, go back to the base tune! It's only a matter of burning a chip, and the base tune is close to the tune you had on your stock PCM

                            I looked at the file I have saved for the pin swap, but I think I may have changed the final product for one reason or other and won't know until I look at the hard copy at the shop

                            I also think you need to put your fuel pressure back to stock and just use the tune to compensate - then see if you actually max out the injectors before bumping the pressure up. Hell, your tune might work if you just lower the pressure to stock or less.

                            I feel you are just simply creating TOO many variables at one time and not seeing the effects each change has on the outcome. I like to change one thing at a time, and even am still learning tuning myself

                              Don't worry about the 02 sensor. Once i get the car running i'll just disconnect one of the wires and see which one throws a flag/code.

                              I'll put the fuel pressure back to stock (43.5) and go back to the original (stock) tune that you sent me.


                              Now that i'm basically starting over what are the changes that i should make right off the bat?

                              We figured out earlier on that the BPC was 210 with 19lb injectors @ 43.5 psi, so will i be ok now to plug that into the tune?

                              Robert said his GP wanted 41 steps for the IAC so should i change mine to something similar?

                              And should I change my oil/filter because it's definitely full of gasoline?

                              Finally, how can i tune differently this time so that i actually make progress? Would one of YOU guys help me with my adjustments just to make sure i'm doing it right?

                              • Don't make any changes at first. Start and log the car with the stock FP and tune, log the entire session. THEN make changes - one at a time.
