  • well this time i simply selected the "512" chip WITHOUT entering 08000 and then hit "erase" it said "erase succesful" but then i hit "blank check" and it said "chip not blank". Then i tried to burn the chip and it said "ERROR chip memory range must be divisible by 64" etc etc

are you SURE i don't have to enter in anything for the offset? because now its worse than before lol

edit: my bad (go easy on me) i didn't have the chip all the way at the bottom of the BURN 2...

edit 2: that only took care of the erasing issue. Now my chip is blank but the .bin won't load onto it.. at least not without changing the # to 08000...

edit3: sorry for all the editing. Now i have got it to work. I did have to use 08000 in chip addressing and then i read the chip, saved the .bin, opened it in tunerpro and voila there was my tune. So it appears that the proper procedure is select chip 512, erase chip, blank check, load .bin into buffer, 08000 in chip addressing, burn chip, verify with buffer (John, it worked when i verified it as a 512 and i didn't have to change it to 256... interesting...)

it helps prevent my sometimes questionable math from making some serious errors...

inputting the number in tunerpro: go to tools->preferences->ALDL/emulation tab. you'll see it from there.

EDIT: i have NEVER had to manually change those numbers to get it to work, since as long as you select your correct chip, the program changes them for you...

the one(and first) time i did(for reading the hypertech BIN for the 85 IROC), it came out all kinds of weird...

DOUBLE EDIT: not read the little text above and below telling you to do that? just don't flip it upside down, or else burn and "burn" could become a reality.

      • lol would it really have been bad if i put it in (the chip) upside down??

yes, now i see the spot in tunerpro where to input com port, but where do i i find which com port it is in my control panel? I'm not QUITE as computer savvy as my bro who builds them lol

did you read my edit? I DID have to manually change the #

        • i've never done it myself, but i've been warned that putting them in backwards will kill the chip.

what version of windows are you running?

and the edit: weird. something i've never had to do. my F040 chips don't seem to need anything played with to blank/read/burn/verify correctly...

EDIT: i've also burned/verified/blanked 512 chips for clients before and not had an issue then either...

          • i have vista, for the moment that is.

All i know is that the chip reads my tune now, so i have succesfully burned my very first custom chip!!!!

            many more to come!

As always, thanks for the help and the patience.

EDIT: it is intersting though, John said i would have to select "256" before i could properly "verify chip with buffer" but apparently i can just keep it as a 512 and verify... i'm curious to hear what he says about that.

            • thank god, i hate having to remember all the XP stuff...

start button-> right click on computer->properties-> on the left, select device manager-> go to ports and you'll find what you're looking for. all of this is assuming you have the cable plugged in... if you don't it won't show up.

              • Well, Max, you have to remember I am not a conformist, nor a "youngin" and I do things the old fashioned/more difficult way. My chip burner will do more than the BURN could imagine, and prefer to keep it that way

                      • simple but very important question...

John's picture of a chip installed into a memory adapter and inside a 7730 shows the end of the chip with the "notch" facing the end WITHOUT the handle/lever on the .zif socket.

                        like so:

but my BURN 2 has directions on it that says have the "notch" towards the "handle" end of the .zif socket.

Which way should the chip be facing when installed in the memory adapter? Is there an easier way to tell?

                        • when it's in the burner and in the ECU are two different situations.

look at the memcal you have sticking on the end. it should have the factory chip with the notch (index) pointing outwards, compared to the rest of the memcal. copy that with your custom chips, just point the index away from the rest of the hardware.

                            • update: my swap kit SHOULD be coming in the mail today and waiting for me after i get out of classes. My hopes being that i can at the least have my car up and running with the new hardware (and my current tune/chip) installed. I doubt i will get a chance to datalog but i may have the chance to scan it with my 9150 actron scanner (this time using a 91 3.1 lumina instead of a 93 3.4 firebird ROFL) to see if any trouble codes come up or the like.

This brings me to a rather dumb question. I have the chip installed in the memory adapter via the .zif socket, but how exactly does the memory adapter intall into the ECM? (remember, i havent seen the ECM yet...)

                              thanks
