You can't (or don't want to, rather) burn the stock memcal. I have that adapter and it makes it nice to read the stock .bin from the stock chip. You will need some kind of chip adapter socket to make life easier. I have the ZIF with the little lever on it that makes it nice to swap in/out chips, but if you get the regular socket and that adapter it's not bad either (and a little cheaper).

I suggest you get the adapter/chip combination, burner (Burn2), memcal adapter and the ALDL USB cable. That will all set you back a couple hundred, but worth it.

    Cable...
This is for any pre-1995 (OBD1) GM vehicle. Everything except the 1995 LT1. You should be able to datalog all of them, and reflash the 94 LT1 as well. Comes with XtremeALDL and NewCABL1 (RJ45/Moates-specific new style). There's a switch on the side which allows you to select 10k (across pins A&B of ALDL) or 'Open' mode. You use the 10k mode for older TBI and TPI setups, and the 'Open' for newer Speed density and LT1 stuff. This item can be used with TunerPro RT, TTS Datamaster, TunerCat reflash for LT1, WinALDL, and EFI Live V4(OBD1).

    Burner...
USB Chip Programmer works with the AT29C256, 27SF512, and AM29F040 chips. Self-powered from the USB port, so no power adapter is needed! Burner can also be used to read stock GM memcals using the HDR1 adapter. While it will only program the three types of chips listed, please note that those three chips can be used as drop-in replacements for most EFI applications. Comes with stand-alone chip programming software (available for download). Also compatible with TunerPro RT. Will read most stock-style chips (2732A, 27C128/256/512/etc). Mini-USB cable is included.

Here's the G1 (you will need chips and might want the header to make programming easier)...

The G1 adapter bypasses your factory tuning, and lets you insert your own custom programmed chip without tearing up your stock memcal. Works with a wide range of GM chipped EFI applications, namely the 1986-1993 TPI & LT1 and the 94/95 TBI trucks.

But you get 2 chips with this socket free (and don't need the header since it's easy to pull the chips)...

This package is very popular. It comes with two 27SF512 chips, an 'S2' ZIF socket, and a G1 adapter! This is everything you need for TPI/etc chip adaptation. If you want different chips or different socket, just purchase the pieces separately from the other items listed.

    Header...

Use this adapter to read the 'stock' binary from your TPI-style Memcal. Plugs into your 'stock' P4-style Memcals. Allows you to download your original 'factory' chip contents directly using a chip programmer/reader like the BURN1 or APU1. Very durable, and designed for repeated use.

you can read the stock EPROMs with the HDR1 but you can't write to them using the BURN2, it doesn't allow it, and if you solder a EEPROM in place of the UV eraseable EPROM (C2), then you can use the HDR1 to program the EEPROM and not need to use an adaptor like the G1/G3... essentially you only spend the $5 it costs for the C2, instead of the 30+ for the g1/g3, although if you like the idea of a switching adaptor, you can put 16 different tunes on a C3 and switch them on the fly... i know i like it, but it isn't cheap...

EDIT: Damnit john posted before me...

        HAHA, Robert was ninja'd :P

I wouldn't suggets a n00b soldering a PROM. Sorry to say, but yes, you are n00bish there no_doz. Perhaps you will have some questions with substance once you get to tuning

oh yeah, well you can't run A1....

my soldering skills are crazy lately, having to do the 51 little terminals on the conversion plugs, resoldered the wife's GP dash(now the low fuel/check guages lights finally turn off), and my other various little projects...

lol i appreciate the input-and now thinking about it i remember needing UV light to remove the old info thats on the chip, & that cant happen while its in the memcal-facepalm like a mofo! also my soldering skills are fine, & my questions may seem noobish, but just because i dont have all the knowledge that you do-doesnt mean i have very little-just means i have very little knowledge pertaining to some of the questions i ask (thats why i ask them).

it my seem noobish to you, but i think going out & actually trying half the shit ive come up with is a hell of a lot more noobish than asking people who already know, & listening to them when they advise not to try it, rather than just going out & doing it (no matter how hard i argue, if presented with good viable evidence that its not worth it, i listen & dont go through with it). i took an electrical class while i was at UNOH as well & did quite well in soldering (i used to solder a lot when we'd install a home AC or new coil).

as i said in another thread, if i was really that bad i would be trying to squeeze that LQ1 into a cavvy as we speak, and regretting every minute of it!

is there any way to use the gm wiring harness, the burn2, & gm chip to run a non-gm engine or an engine with a different stroke?

in that case the burner and chip wouldn't matter much, but to run a GM harness directly, the non-GM motor would have to use the same sensors and connectors. it could happen, but don't count on it. different stroke won't matter either.

as for using a UV eraser and old stock chips, save yourself the trouble and expense and just use flash chips, it takes less than 1 second to erase the chip and they are rated for THOUSANDS of burns/erases. i wouldn't trust the stock one for more than 5.

Depends on how many questions you ask.. and we all know you're good for plenty of those

                  Moates = the best.

oh im sure therell be no shortage of those
