  • 302>165ecm w/ 730memcal swap problems

Ok here's the car and engine. 89 2.8, but now I have a 3.4 with 17lb injectors instead of the 2.8's 15lb. It ran fine, but my mileage dropped quite a bit and there wasn't really much of a power gain over the old worn out 2.8. The 3.4 was new.

I just recently repinned the harness using instructions already used on an 85 and an 89 to use a 165 ecm with a 730 memcal and a bin/xdf already setup for an 85 2.8 with the same conversion.

The car starts and runs, but not very well, gets rough when i give it gas, the fan is running, and the SES is lit up.

I jumped A&B and got 12 (everything normal so far), but also 21 (tps) and 34 (maf). So I guess the ecm is good, and when turning the key to run the ses blinks on, off, then stays on, which means it's going through the prom.

The only things I changed were the injector flow rates (single) 15.02 to 17.02, and (double) 14.99 to 16.99.

Stoichiometric AFR is right next to them and is 14.69, but was I correct in leaving that alone, or does it need to be changed along with the injectors?

Did I even change the injector size correctly?

I also installed a knock sensor and plugged it into B11 (that what the others did) ,but B11 on the 165 is shown as 'unused (esc)' and B7 as (knock)

I also notice the 165 has a MAF ground from A11, but my 302 ecm doesn't have a pin listed for maf ground.

Somebody else on thirdgen said my ecm is in limp mode because the prom might not be active, but the ses light doing what is does says it's going through the prom

Also, does anybody know what ADS file I need for tunerproRT to datalog and whatnot with the V6? The four that came with it are for V8s.

Have you replaced your tps/maf or figured out your wiring issue yet? Haven't seen you post on 3rdgen lately (probably not enough help). You changed the inj. constant right. The knock sensor's on B11 because you should be using the memcal mounted esc board and not the separate esc module that came stock with the tpi motors. The tpi esc module's signal is wired to B7 but needs other wiring added so it's much easier just to use the memcal mounted board. Don't worry about the maf ground, it's unimportant. The stock v6 maf grounds outright, no return to the ecm. When you decide to put a t-bird maf on there you don't need to worry about grounding either. Just tie the 2 grounds together and wire them to the original ground wire.
Increasingly I find the difference between a "fact" and an opinion is the number of people who believe it.

I'll try a new tps too I guess if they're not too much. I've been in California for the last month and will start messing with it again when I get home in 10 days.

I tried changing the injector flow rates to 17lb (injector constant?), but I've also left the programming untouched. Doesn't make a difference.

I can only think of five things.

      A. the maf is bad and affects the new ecm, but not bad enough to affect the stock ecm (I doubt it though)

      B. The ecm I'm trying to install is bad in some way.

      C. The addressing on the chip isn't right, (but I've double checked it several times and even ordered a few extras and tried them too.)

      D. The memcal is bad

      E. My pin swap is wrong (quintuple checked it)

I doubt there's enough difference between a 2.8 a mile up in colorado and a 3.4 with headers 300 ft above sea level to make it mess up as bad as it is.

If the t-bird maf doesn't work, I think I migh start begging around between these two sites to see if I can mail my ecm, memcal, and chip to someone who's swap does work, and talk them into/pay them to try it in their car. If it works in someone elses car, then I'll know there's something wrong in my pin swap or whatever. If someone else starts it and it has the same problems, then I'll know its the ecm, memcal, or chip.

At least I understand the difference between B7 and B11 now. Thanks

I'm as certain as I can be without seeing the car that the maf/tps is your problem. It has all the symptoms of a bad maf and somewhat of a tps sensor, but I'd expect the engine to bog when you open the throttle. From what I remember, you said that it just runs like crap, no bog right?

Pretty much just runs bad. It runs ok for the first second or two, then the engine light comes on and it starts idling a bit rough. Smells like it's running rich too a little bit. When I give it gas is when it gets really bad. Thinking about what it was doing I'd say it was bogging.

Lately when I've been driving it (with the stock 302 ecm) it seems like my mileage has dropped a bit but still seems to be running fine. Kind of lacks in upper rpm power though.

Anyways, I'll give a new tps a try and get the t-bird maf installed and see what happens when I get home.

*NOTE. Don't forget (and to remind others who read this) the car runs fine and with no code 34 being triggered when I'm using the stock 1227302 ecm. That's why I wasn't too sure about the maf or tps being bad. I've mentioned it on 3rdgen, but when I posted here originally, I had just done the swap and didn't really think about stressing that the car only runs bad with the new 165 ecm.

And yes... repinning it back and forth is annoying. I need to finish making my "plug and play" adapter when I get home.
