Okay, I made up a good (max232 chip) cable, so I'm good there. I'm using a 200mhz(?) laptop, which I think is plenty fast... I got the two of them to talk, and can change the idle rpm, look at stuff... But the problem is, that it seems like it takes 10 seconds for everything to update! Even my 160baud from my camaro updated like twice a second... I'm trying to figure out of my O2 sensor is going, so I need a quick refresh. I tried clicking on the "log data" button, but when I opened the file after it was done, it was blank! AAAAHHHHHHH! 2 questions: why is it so damn slow, and why isn't it logging? It also crashed twice! This software seems to be crap IMO, anybody else having this problem and/or any suggestions?

You have to stop the data log or it will be empty once you close freescan. Also, did you try changing the ms freshrate rate? Default is 100.
What os are you using? 98SE is pretty stable, 2K has to have the refesh set a little higher, XP didnt like it too much.
What definition file are you using and what car/engine do you have?Ben

??? I don't think I have a 3.1 option on the menu?? I'll check. Will this solve my problem of it updating (the "dashboard" and the CSV log) every 1-3 seconds? I know for sure the "log ECU to file" doesn't work no matter what, and the CSV only works when I check the "interact mode".Okay now, that's enough of that.

Well my engine is a 93, so I guess its time to update some software before I mess with it anymore.
Does freescan require the 91-93 MEMCAL or the ECM? Or both?
Memcal should be simple. Ecm will be a bit more expensive, but still possible.
On a side note, anyone know of a LOCAL chain type store that would solder my ZIF socket to a spare memcal? I'd rather not send it out to anyone and Im too chicken to try soldering it in there myself. Im fine with removing the stock eprom, but those 28 pins are pretty darn close. Would a TV repair shop or something be able to handle something like that for me? I cant think of a place that would definately do it.

Radio Shack would have done it.....BACK in the days. Now its a freakng phone place...LOL... oh...off subject...
Well yea they should be able to with a fair price. I should tell you Chris that the beretta ecms seem to change alot from year to year...even some chips and dirvers seem to differe. I have compred ecms to verrify. Those w-body ecms seem to stay the same though. Thats prob why we have problems. I will prob resort to making my own code.88 Beretta GTU turbo . 90 Black ASC/McLaren TGP, awaiting 4t80. 2003 Grand AM se 3400/4t45 daily grind.

With my previous beretta I was swapping ECM's and memcals like $2 whores and never really had a problem with how the car would run. The problems I ran into were with differences between US - Canadian ECM's and memcals. Originally my previous beretta was from Arizona so was in MPH. I wanted KM/H so I went about mix matching ECMs and memcals. At one point in time I had my speed limiter kicking in at 110 km/h. That really sucked. Even using Corsica ECM's from other years I never experienced any poor driveability. Maybe I was just lucky. I'll give a 91 3.1L auto ECM and memcal a try next chance I get. Shouldnt be too different and I'll still avoid the ABS and other added features. I have a 91+ interior anyway, might as well finish the swap.
Seriously think Radio Shack would be able to solder something like that for me? They seem like tools whenever Im in there. Getting the old Eprom out was easy. Just did that in like 3 minutes with a spare memcal. I might go buy a tiny soldering iron and give it a try on my own.
