  • What color is your MEMCAL?

so im sure this sounds like a stupid question, but I wanna make sure before I solder my 29C256 chips in. Ive had dozens of memcals, and they have always been a grey/tan color. When I got more in the batch there were 2 that the memcal was black. The person that got them for me dosent remember what they came out of. I just wanted to know if it was common for GM to use different color memcal's for similar applications, or does the different color indicate a different knock sensor detection circuit board?

Yeah, ive had black ones as well. You should get 1 adapter so you can test them out in your car. I stopped selling memcals because some were bad and I already soldered a chip on them. Well worth the money but you gotta either increase your sell price or make less per. Much less headaches (never had a bad adapter).

      what u mean by adapter?

how can I test the knock circuitry without putting a chip in it and going out and beating on it?

Adapter will test the memcal out as you run your own car's code on the adapters chip and then test the memcals stuff out. This is what I did before just selling adapters.

Look at the 60V6 store to see what the adapter is:P

im still not sure what your talking about by the tester.

but as for the adaptr, u mean the PCB so that it just uses their old knock part of the chip?

ooooooooooooooooo............. OK I understand what your talking about by using the adapter now.

if the knock circuitry is bad, what will happen? Will it just not detect knock? Or will it be showing alotta knock if its bad?

I dunno, i think it just plain won't work at all. Ive never ripped a knock sensor filter off to see. I know if the resistor packs are bad or wrong that it will throw an SES light and not run for shit. I haven't tried a V8 memcal but I know bad V6 memcals will let you know by a fan running all the time and the car not running or running like ass.

Yeah. Also check to see if your getting more knock than usual. I found a couple that were either more sensitive or just not doing its job to filter everything for the ECM. False knock isn't going to help you performance wise.

All memcal's I have ever had were that tan brown color, every one of them were straight from the cars. I did get one black memcal, I bought it from GM and it was the BCFA 3.4 DOHC 5 speed memcal. So based on my experience, they are replacements if they are black. Not that I'm sure that's the case, but just based on what I know, this is the case.

Maybe they made all aftermarket ones black to show the fact that it is not an origional..?

interesting. also ive noticed that on the blue cover of the tan memcals, it has a patend number & some other info. but the black ones have had nothing on them. i wonder if thats related.
