  • whats my best bet (ecm swaps)

ok im just starting to get into tuning my ecm. ive done a bunch or reading, but i am a beginer to this.

my car has a 7302 ecm, and from what ive read, its basicly the most useless ecm as far as tuning goes. it uses a rom, not a prom, and noboody supports it. from what ive read (and am told) im going to have to swap a different ecm in.

im told my best bet would be a 7730 ecm. any other options??? what do you guys think??? or at this point, should i just go full stand alone, such as the F.A.S.T. or holley comander??? i know full stand alone is going to cost a pile (more than i wanna spend), but being i gotta swap to a different ecm anyways, would it even be worth swapping another gm ecm in???

btw: car is an 86 cavy z24, 2.8l 5 speed. this uses a distributor and maf sensor.

there are advantages to using a stock ecm - like the code may already be close.. and its cost.. but then you also need the stuff from moates to be able to tune it

both routes have advantages and disadvantages

i dunno, still costs a bit totune with a stock ecm. i mean i gotta get a chip burner ($50+) and a stuable program ($70+) and an eeprom. if i want to do real time tuning, i need an emulator ($200+) and the program for that. its still cheaper than a stand alone, but tuning with a stand alone is easier, even if it does take longer.

what do you guys think the best factory ecm is to swap in, and why??? if im gonna end up swapping an ecm, i want the best possible. what do you guys think the best bet is with stand alone???

I am currently installing an electromotive tec3r and it has a lot of nice features but you will have to wait a bit for an operational evaluation. I still don't have the motor back yet to put in the car.

im interested in the same thing sharkey.

i was thinking of looking for a 3.4 camaro 5 speed ecm. its obd2, but since its flash programed maybe there are more options, and you can pull the ecm from a yard for likr $50.

I would go 7730. I *think* the v6 camaro's use the 7730 with a distributor. It might be the $88 code. You'll ditch the MAF. Do you have any mods or something? I guess "tuning" and "2.8" don't really mesh well in my mind. "Does not compute" keeps popping up.

btw- you don't need an emulator. IMHO, total overkill, especially since you already have a pretty good base program with the above.
Okay now, that's enough of that.

i would have thought the 3.4l ecm would have been an obd1.5. if not, id guess its a 7730. btw, the 3.4l uses dis ignition, map sensor (no maf) and is sfi.

as for mods, its fully built. forged pistons, beam polished rods, high volumne oil pump, comp cams 260h2, 1.6:1 rockers, ported heads and intake, custom headers, dual exaust, ect. its a decently built street motor, but it is for sure being choked down with the stock tuning.

this thread has been brought back fromn the dead. i have decided to go with a megasquirt, just havent ordered it yet

Oh yeah... that was you. Quick question - what is the maximum RPM the megasquirt can handle? Just curious...

I think it is somewhere in the 12K range.

Nice! See, so there is a reason to go to megasquirt - sport bike EFI!

it has been done before. overall megasquirt is very versitile. it may not run 100% of everything thats in every car (like the emmisions crap) but it is a nice peice. and the price is even better.

There are somany people doing this, they have started designing a smaller computer (credit card sized ) . There are tons of turbo MS'ed busa motors out there. Lots of people have also replaced there computer on their Harleys (the new fuel injected ones) and just tuned the shit out of them (I have heard they come detuned from the factory, lots of room for improvment).
