  • question about swapping ECMs...

alright, what i'm planning on doing is using a 93-95 F-body engine and tranny with a W-body ECM of around the same year and putting it in a '72 opel manta.

i finally started on the wiring diagram that i want to complete before i even start work on the car, i found a real nice complete diagram for the exact year and model of my car, opened it up in mspaint and got to work. first i deleted anything engine related that wouldn't be going into the new wiring system. then i drew up some new symbols for the 3.4L sensors. then i got to thinking, since at this time of year i pretty much just install remote starters for a living, and most newer cars that aren't a POS will have a chip in the key to stop theft and such. so my question is, do those years of the F-body and W-body use this? and if only one does, and not the other, then will this present problems when mixing the different engine and ECM? i'm sure if they do use it, i can just bypass it with a bit of tricky wiring, but i'd rather find out what i'm dealing with first.

    thanks all

I am not positive but I think the anti theft key chips were installed on the obdII series computers which would be after 96. Anyone else know for sure?

I know that the '95 Luminas had the VAT system... easy to bypass. Just get a VATS bypass module on Ebay.

i'm pretty sure the more "advanced" system was 96+.

edit: actually i think my mom's old 95 lesabre 3800II had the chip.

No. They were not. Your chip in the key thingy is called VATS And the new 96+ thing is PassKey. Passkey i believe works on the same principal (by measuring resistance) but it does so by mesauring the key itself. Hence, if you bust a screwdriver through the ignition and turn, it will disable the car.

Advantages: You can go to wal-mart and get a key copied for 97 cents. Rather than pay 150 at a dealership.
