single wire o2 to 4-wire o2 conversion

far as i got before i parked it was... pcm not going into closed loop.. tried 3 different o2 sensors

let me know if you can get a 4 wire working, i need tog et a brand new o2, so if it works i might get one, otherwise im goin with the ol single wire :P

The O2 sensor has to warm up to 600F before it start taking readings. Typically in a one wire setup it just uses the heat from the exhaust. Until the O2 warms up it runs in open loop which means the ECM is running the engine off of tables, not actual measurements. for someone running boost or larger injectors or custom tuned EPROM, the car will usually have a difficult time running in open loop. Then if you try to drive in open loop it will sputter and stall and be a PITA. This allows the car to enter closed loop (when the O2 starts taking readings) much quicker and drastically shortens warm-up time.

i picked up a pigtale from an 04 malibu today, unfortunetly i couldnt get the o2 sensor out. i priced out a new o2 sensor today and it was $150. are all the 4 wire o2 sensors the same on all gm's??? im wondering if i get a 4 wire sensor from an older (94-95-ish) would be cheaper.

basicly, are they all the same???

i believe they are the same, but id recommend getting a new / newer O2 anyways. Now much point of installing a 10yr old sensor into your car.

i was looking at buying a new sensor. from what i have found, the older the car ots for, the cheaper it is.

i picked up a sensor today. i found that the 00-03 sensor (used the white sqare plug, the one shown in the how to) was arround $140 CAD. i got a sensor from a 98-00 (black square plug) and it was only $60. less than half the cost, all for a different style plug.

i had to modify the plug to make it plug from the 03 malibu to get the older sensor to plug into it. it aprears gm moved the tab inside the plug from one side to the other. all i did was trim the harness end of the plug to plug into the older style o2 sensor. 30 seconds of work to save $80. anyone with a newer car, keep this in mind when ya gotta change the o2 sensor.
