Not really... I had made an adapter to try to read from the chip using my Pocket Programmer. The problems I ran into basically consisted of the PP powering up other components on the board when it powered up the chip, just through reverse wiring. With other components powered up, you couldn't get an accurate reading from the chip.

Even if you managed to get a reading off of the chip, you would have to break the Assembly code of the program and figure out where all the tables and such were. All of the programming would have to be done in Assembly because there is no definition file out there for these PCMs, so none of the regular tuning software would know how to handle the code.

All of the companies I know that are doing this sort of thing either remove the chip or use direct ALDL programmers (such as the Tech2).

So what computer could I use that willl run a 3100 (well 3400 now) that I scan/program/whatever/ that will plug into the orginal harness? One from a '94 Grand Am, or does it have to be older than that?

Nothing will plug directly into the harness. You can make a pigtail adapter (like I did) and use a '4396 ECM to run the engine.

Do you have any instructions to do it? I remember something about you have to move some ground wires or something?

I am pretty sure I still have all of my wiring diagrams for my car (94 3100... should be similar to your setup) and a 92 Z34 (the '9396 ECM (yeah, I goofed in my previous message... its a 16149396)) and what wires go where. And I also have part numbers for the connectors and pins you would need to buy to assemble the pigtail. Look at spending around $100 for parts and such and alot of hours soldering to do it.

It seems worth it though. I already put a lot of time into my car, so a more won't hurt to much. You should make a 'how-to' for this.

I could... I might... especially since it is starting to become of greater interest to a growing number of people...

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me too.
Seems lot's of folks want to be able to tune the GEN III's with the 4T60-E, but the OBD-II PCM is a limiting factor there. Replacing the OBD-II PCM with the 16149396 is the surely cheapest way to go.
The trans interfacing is an important aspect, as I am sure there were differences thoughout the production years.

If I can be of any assitance, I would be happy to contribute what I can.

I know that the 4t60e wiring that the 9396 expects is only found on the 91-93 DOHC.

Mick, your assistance would be GREATLY appreciated. I know for sure that I need to fix my GND point since that is what you think was causing my erratic MAP readings. I was also planning on pointing them in your direction for the tuning software.

As far as the 4T60e wiring and such goes, there has to be a way to find out the other coding for the other setups. I know my tranny never went into OD for the short time I was messing with the project. I know there are 4 different internal variations to the 4T60e wiring, but most of it just has to do with either temp sensors or PWM solenoids.

Once I get started in it, I'll post updates and questions that I come across.

Hmmm, the 2 shift solonoids and the TCC is all that is required and is all that is common on all tranny's (if you leave the TCC PWM solonoid unhooked it will just engage full force like its not there). If some way could be found to fool the ECM for the 1st and 4th gear switches it would make the 9396 a universal drop in replacement for MPFI engines.

It may be possible to add a simple logic circuit to the range switch that would simulate the 1st and 4th gear switches the ECM is looking for

Ok, here is a VERY preliminary copy of the swap guide. Just what I have gotten done at school in a couple hours of free time:

It will be much more detailed AND in PDF format once everything is completed, but at least it will give you an idea of what will be involved. Well, ok.. maybe not, since I really haven't done much yet except get some part number info and where to get everything.
