  • new memcal, calibration reqiured?

hi, hope someone can help. 92 regal, 3.1, code 43, i just replaced the knock and that did'nt do the trick so i'm on to the memcal. my question is this, i was told that on this car the chip has to be "calibrated" when installed? does anyone know this to be correct, or can i just pop the new one in and erase codes and go. i'm working on this for my mom and she's really at a loss without her car. i know the dealer is gonna beat her up with a bill and she just does'nt have it so if anyone can help me here it would be greatly appreciated- thanks

did you just replace the sensor or did you go through the proceedure to track down the gremlin
a code 43 is a fault in the knock sensor circuit it doesnt necessarily mean the sensor is bad
and did you clear the codes after replacement

at first there were no codes and had the stalling condition, but would start back up, then it died on her and would not start up till later that day , after we towed it home.thats when we checked codes and got a 42 and 43. so i replaced knock sensor, my dad had bought one already anyway, cleared the codes by disconecting the battery and did the idle relearn procedure. now i only get a code 43, it does not seem to have stall condition but at half throttle or more it misses something awful. sounds kinda like a rev-limiter on a race car if that makes any sense.idles fine and is responsive at the lower rpms. so i dont know what procedure you speak of? .what about the memcal?if i get one from the dealer can i just pop it in and erase the codes, or is there more that needs to be done. i'm all ears, so to speak.

The memcals will fail, but its very rare, almost to the point of ruling it out. The ECM itself might have an issue, or it could be wiring.

can i replace the ecm myself or do i need to bring it to a tech.i have it in front of me #16141203. is there a way to test memcal alone and ecm alone? basically just want to know where to go from here.buy a new part or bring it to a dealer?

You can swap it out easily, its just 4 plugs. That part number doesn't look familar though.

yeah , that's because it's not the ecm. just got back from the dealer and he directed me in the right location. i'm going out now to pull it out. i read in another thread that if the ecm is bad, it wont spit out codes? this one does. i also read gm had alot of problems with ecms in these years. not sure what to do here, what would you do?

you say your still getting a code 43 right
go to autozone and tell them to give the print out for code 43
i had it but dont know what i did with it
youll need a timing light and a multimeter to perform the proceedure thats a start

me again. just put a new ecm in from autozone, erased codes, did idle relearn and guess what same thing. i'm guessing memcal chip is next and if that does'nt do it i dont know what i'll do. just thinking out loud here, does anyone think the coilpacks could cause this condition?fuel pressere? i tested it with a gauge, had 45 psi when i keyed the ignition and held a steady 40 while running. a short in blinker or ignition?blinker has issuses and you have to jiggle key sometimes to get it to turn? just grasping at straws here. o boy

                          no what i ment was
go to autozone tell them you scanned for codes and got a 43
then tell them to look up in the computer that they use to find out what part you need and find the info for code 43
then they can print that screen then after they give you the print out get you timing gun and multimter and follow the instructions on it
