Probably wouldn't hurt to contact the source that created DHP.

Ah, well... it would be great to test this. Do you guys realize that over 125 Mb of files are involved to graphically display and manipulate what... 1mb of calibration??? It's like buying an old city bus to give your friend a ride down the street! Anyway, I've spent about 3 hrs with dotnet installs trying to get something to work. dotnet2.0 is on the laptop, but no good. dotnet3.5 is on the laptop, but no good. the dotnet version called out during dhp setup fails to install. Who knows how this is gonna turn out.

actually, only 512KB of cal.... 256KB in 1996 even.
Edit: Sucks getting old. You forget stuff. I just switched to my desktop in my office and there's already a copy of powrtuner installed. Let's see how it works.Last edited by 1project2many; 03-13-2013, 12:13 AM.

None of the .net redistributables would install on the laptop. I didn't get around to trying an update for the versions already installed though but that's a separate issue probably related to my tweaking something else.
The desktop installation wouldn't communicate with the cable but that's not a definitive answer. I used AVT Hex terminal to try and get some cable information using the command set for the 841 but I didn't see any activity so I'll have to look into that. Heck, I may have an 838 also since my cable's so old.
One thought for anyone with a working cable. Use serial port monitoring software such as portmon to log the commands sent during installation then compare the commands to the appropriate AVT command set. If there's any communication with a secret locking device it will show up here.
Hopefully I can spend more time with this tonight. At a minimum I should be able to view basic cable info in AVT Hex editor.

Cable = fail.
Notes:
Cable must be connected to 12V on ALDL side. No comms without it.
AVT Hex terminal will communicate with cable when 12V applied
Still haven't determined what version AVT cable I have
Error message "cable is corrupted"
Monitoring comms on a working assembly would give us the return string when all is ok. Simplest check would be to use a hex editor or a disassembler to view the DHP program looking for that specific string then modify the values to your cable, or NOP the test so it doesn't apply.
Just some thoughts.

He's referring to the whole module... DHP referrs to the setup as just a "cable"

Right... by "cable" I mean "Cable(s) plus AVT firmware."
I don't believe the cable is corrupted. My hunch is that DHP initiates a hex request to the AVT hardware and the AVT returns a string with identifying information. The string returned could indicate AVT version, firmware revision, baud rate, or a few other bits. There may have been an option to order the AVT hardware with custom data strings as well. My cable could be "corrupt" for a reason as simple as unable to switch to high speed communications (mine's old enough that it's 57,600 only).
I was trying to open the database yesterday to see if there's any relevant communications data inside. I tried a few programs but had troubles with all... anyone know the trick to get in?

It will not register with the avt-852 i tried it. Also i had a dhp and it was registered reading and writing when i plugged in my 852 it didnt work no response

According to the email people have used the AVT-852 with DHP but as you said, it's unknown if it'll be able to do the device registration that the DHP software requires. I wouldn't mind being the guinea for this if I didn't already have an interface that I could just send in for repairs.Last edited by roughneck427; 03-21-2013, 08:58 PM.
