  • A couple Questions

    The ECM is a 16196401 which is a 94' OBD 1.5 3.4L DOHC.

So I'm as huge of a nub as it gets when it comes down to tuning and data logging, now i remember back in 07' everyone said "fck obd 1.5!"

So which brings me to here according to moates with an adapter specificly this one

and doing a tad bit of reading specifically this, stating: 94-95 W-body LQ1: uses the regular MEMCAL found in 1227165/7727/7730 ECMs, you can use the G1 adapter in these units also.

which the 1227165 brings up application wise:

    1986 2.0 L4 TBI “P” LQ5 w/ MT
    1986-89 5.0 V8 TPI “F” LB9
    1986-89 5.7 V8 TPI “8” L98
    1987-91 truck 2.5 L4 TBI “E” LN8
    1991 truck 2.5 L4 TBI “A” L38

    the 7727 brings up:

    1988-89 2.8 V6 PFI “W” LB6 (“W” body)
    1989-93 3.1 V6 PFI “T” LH0 (“W” body)
    1989-90 3.1 V6 PFI turbo “V” LG5

So if I'm understanding, I could get the memcal out of one of the older 3.1L ECMs and use the chip adapter then tune it for the LQ1 specifically the 93 since 93 got the 4T60-E or am I just way off on this one? I really dont feel like completely rewiring the car for yet a 3rd time, but I have contemplated on downgrading it to Full OBD 1 just to spare a few headaches doing a downgrade to OBD 1 would be alot easier then upgrading to OBD 2 just for the simple fact finding a DOHC harness for a 96-97 Monte is next to impossible around here. Or if 94-95 can be tuned. Even better.

good to see my donated info is being well used.

the 94-95 LQ1 PCM is tunable.

your idea of swapping in an older PROM for the 94-95 PCM will not work. the 91-93 and 94-95 3.4 PCMs are far too different for that to work. they have the same connectors and look identical externally, but that's about it. the differences in both programming and the hardware inside are gigantic.

Interesting, thanks for the bit of info, I had knew they was different but by how much I had no clue. App in order to start playing with the coding, what all would be needed?

to mess with the stock calibration with the 94-95 LQ1 PCM, you'll need a PROM burner, a replacement PROM(27SF512 work great) and either soldering skills and a Moates HDR1 or an adapter to bypass the stock calibration(Moates G1 works great here) with either a ZIF socket or the HDR1.

sounds good, Lets say if i wanted to keep the 94-94 LQ1 wiring for lets say a 3400/3500 im assuming i would be able to set up the ecm to use the different engine

I have been wanting to get into tuning for a while and doing up a 94-95 setup would seem to be not as bad

could be done with a 3400 directly and retain the MAF, 3500 needs it's typical swap mods(crank trigger, TB).

you'll probably be one of a very few people that have retained that PCM for an engine swapped car, it's not a popular one to play with.

Hmm that is deff a thought there. Thanks for the info

I know its not ideally the best pcm to keep but i dont feel like rewiring the entire car for a 3rd time lol
