  • OBD 1.5 to OBD II questions...

Hey guys, I was on here a while ago and got the EGR adapter. Finished my 3400 top swap on my 3100 94 oldsmobile cutlass ciera. Ended up also putting in a larger exhaust because it was choking itself. Now with everything else done it still seems like it should have more pep than it does. I'm wondering if the stock tune is holding it back.

I'm pretty sure 96 Ciera's got the OBD II computers, but I'm not sure if everything else on the 3100 SFI engines and 4t60-E transmissions were the same as on the 94's. If they were I would think that maybe I could just put the 96 computer in my 94.

I was wondering though if any of you guys know what's different between the two? Did the 96 ciera's have a MAP instead of a MAF? Basically I'd like to keep the MAF sensor and at the same time have a computer I COULD ACTUALLY TUNE!!! UGH!!! I was reading older posts and I've already contacted TuneCat, but basically I'm tired of having a computer that I can't do anything with.

So can the computer swap be done, maybe with some repinning of harnesses? Or would I have to go through the PITA process of putting a whole engine harness in and messing around with that headache? I was hoping since they did put the OBD II in the 96' Ciera's but they kept the same Engine/Trans combo that I could get away with a somewhat simple swap.

    Thanks in advance

umm.... you already have a tuneable computer... it runs on the $1FA mask. i believe you can also run $2E BINs as well....

Sorry if I seem completely stoopid, but what the heck is that? I've never heard of $1FA or $2E BINs. What all would I need to be able to tune it? AFAIK I'd have to take out the PROM chip, program it, put it back in and cross my fingers that I don't push it too far... I'm really interested in knowing what my options are. Thanks for actually responding though lol, I was begining to wonder if anyone would.

NEED to tune on your own: ALDL cable, laptop, chip burner, 1 or 2 EEPROMs, either decent soldering skills and a HDR1 adapter from moates, or a G1 adapter with a ZIF socket from moates. i can supply you with a decent tuning definition(more accurate and filled out than the one tunercat offers interestingly enough), and a full datalogging definition for use in tunerpro.

if you really want to throw money at this, you could grab an emulator so you can make changes in realtime, but it's not a necessity.

and i wouldn't try crossing your fingers as a method of tuning... good decisions create good results. shooting in the dark will almost always miss the target.

Thank you so much, that's awesome. Do you have a rough estimate on how much everything I need would cost (sans the laptop, I have to hunt around for that)? Also when I start looking for a laptop to use what's the best operating system for the program you have?

I'll definately be in contact with you when I can get together everything I'll need. Judging from the fact that you've been here since 2007 I'm guessing you're not going anywhere anytime soon Thanks again.

simplest burner to use is the BURN2 from moates ($85)
ALDL Cable, i can make serial versions for less than $15 and USB for less than $30(though to make it worth my time, i sell them for 30 and 45) and can get you diagrams if you feel up to it. otherwise, the cheapest serial and USB cables made commercially are the ones from aldlcable.com and are $60
you can pick up EEPROMs for $5 each
            a HDR1 adapter is $10 i think?
G1 adapter + ZIF socket is like $45

tunerpro RT is free, just has a 10 second nag screen, and the defintions to both tune and log are free as well.

as for laptops, just look at the tunerpro requirements. they aren't very intensive, and i can personally guarantee it works with both windows Vista and 7.
