wipers

hi all....ive had a problem with my wipers....little wire in the switch keeps comin loose and i just want too hook up the wipers on a stand alone switch...problem im having is when i do so the wipers only go up 6 inches and come right back down when hooked directly to a power source...ive come across yellow purple and black wires....purple is low yellow is high and i believe black is ground...can anyone hellppp???!!!! 1995 lumina ls 3.4 dohc
