  • Please Help! Have a question! Little confused?

Ok a while now I've been cruzing this forum reading and enjoying the much needed knowledge...
I keep running across a certain line I keep reading ever once in a while...
Is it myth or truth about the stock factory computer being able to
handle around 7psi boost? Is this true? Can some one honestly back this up with personal experience? If so how well does it handle it, is it street able, and negative side effects?
Please help me with this? I'm a carb man, but love boost, I've built a few
carbed blown motors, as well as draw through turbo motors...
And I'm a little worried about investing money in a efi that can't support my
    add-ons...
What stock system supports this? MPFI, TBI, TPI...
    thanks guy....

I'm looking at making this mod on my used 2.8 I just picked up...

what computer are you refering to? an ecu running on tgp code will handle 14psi, and i believe the code59 guys have figured out a way to get their 7749's to 28psi?

      Well I'm not sure?
I would like to run TBI, with 6-8psi boost with out problem as a daily driver on a stock 2.8
      Is this possible

as far as i know..... there werent any factory TBI turbo setups(especially not on a 60*)... not sure why you would want tbi, but your vehicle, your choice, don't let me impede on your freedom of vehicle mods...

depending on the vehicle, it might be easiest to use TGP code on a 7727/7730 ECU and as long as you don't need to have electronic tranny control, you'll be fine. you can run up to 14psi, theres a bunch of people who have already done it that can help, and its very reliable.

theres others who know much more about this than me, but i can give you a a basic idea...

Ok don't need the tranny control, I'm running a T5 5spd. As for tbi or what-not I'm thinking
easiest set up.. Like I said earlier I'm a carb guy.. this will be my first introduction into
          efi of any kind.. Newbie
This I'm sorry is French to me "TGP code on a 7727/7730 ECU "
          you lost me..
But that's why I'm here to learn this stuff just dumb it down a little, you know like talking to a really slow three year old with a hearing problem

trust me, we were all at this place that you are now. hell, i went from a 355/double pumper 750 holley/ridiculous cam/true 3" exhaust/2500RPM stall turbo 350 1983 el camino with 400+HP to a 95 monte with 160HP....... quite an "upgrade", but at least i get 30MPG almost all the time, compared to the 8-9MPG at best with the elky.....

i'll try and make it understandable, but i'm not the most knowledgable on the subject and will probably give the occasional wrong answer, but it all works for me...

as far as simplicity, TBI is what you'll understand the most, granted you have even a sliver of knowledge about carbs, so i'll try and explain or find links that'll talk for me.

i'll have to ask questions first to see what you really want to do and what you're willing to sacrafice.

            1. do you plan on tuning/wiring it yourself?
            2. whats the most important thing(s) about the vehicle this motor is going into( A/C / cruise control / drivability )

from what i can tell so far
you have a manual tranny: that opens a lot of options.
you want a turbo: that narrows it down quite a bit

to run a turbo, you'll need a computer from a vehicle that orignally had a turbo (or possibly a MAF based system(something tells me you have no idea what that is?)) vehicles that would be good for searching here are anything with a 1227727/1227730/1227749 ECM.

            let me guess, WTF, right?

GM came up with a shitload of different computers for different vehicles and those are the part numbers of the ones listed above that have some kind of turbo capability. you'll find the 7727/7730 ECMs in a LOT of different vehicles, from grand prix/luminas/cutlasses to camaros/firebirds and more. i think the only vehicles that had the 7749 ECM were sunbird turbos and GMC syclone/typhoon.

thats all i can think of at the moment, but more questions will give more answers

And when someone says TGP code or $59, they are talking about the actual computer code programmed into the chip in the ECM, which is what you take out and reprogram when "tuning" an EFI vehicle (if it is OBD1, OBD2 you plug a programmer into the car and your laptop and reprogram it with your laptop instead of writing the new code to a chip and installing the chip in your car). http://www.diy-efi.org/ is a good source to help get going on the subject. There are also various sites that explain what to do to tune a car. If I were you, before going with boost, I would tune the engine without the turbo to get used to the concepts behind tuning. Now when someone says $59 or $DF they are talking about what is called the code mask ($59 being a boost one, and $DF being for my DOHC). What a code mask does is tells the tuning program what areas of the data on the chip do what. What I mean is it will say this part contains the idle speed, this part contains the spark timing map, this part contains the injector size, this part contains the coolant temp to turn on and off the fan, this part contains the speed limiter, ect. Also what everyone calls the chip is known to GM as a MEM-CAL, which stands for MEMory and CALibration. The chip also contains the knock filter specific to your engine which filters all of the noise out of the signal from the knock sensor that the computer uses to determine if it has too much spark advance, at which point it retards the timing some to avoid detonation. It also has a part that is what controls the computer when it determines everything is too fubared to run on the sensors and goes into what is called "limp home mode", which is just like what it sounds like. MEM-CALs are specific to what engine/code mask you are using pretty much (from what I understand), meaning I wouldn't want to go using one from a 4x4 S10 in my car.

                1. No I would rather not have to write/tune but if need be I'll learn

Tuning your car will always help it perform at it's peak, especially if you have modified the engine with something like a big cam or boost. I actually lol'd at the old ladies and babies thing, rofl! BTW, I wouldn't go by that site alone. Do a search on google for tuning efi and browse through what you see as well.
