  • HUD DISPLAY/INSTALL/Wiring

I haven't seen a thread that says how to install a HUD in a car that doesnt have one.. Thought I would share my experience with it...

I have a 95 Prix,HUD came from a 94' Prix,Several of the cars in the yard that didnt have HUD had the wiring for HUD,but mine did not.. So

    HUD wires
    1994-1996 HUD wiring:
    A1: BROWN - HUD on/off
    A2: GRAY/BLACK - PARK LAMPS on
    A3: EMPTY
    A4: DARK GREEN - VSS
    A5: TAN - OIL PRESSURE
    A6: DARK GREEN/WHITE - LOW FUEL
A7: LIGHT BLUE - LEFT turn
    A8: BLACK - GROUND
    B1: YELLOW - HUD up
    B2: BROWN - HUD down
    B3: LIGHT BLUE - E/M conversion
    B4: BROWN - CHARGE indicator
B5: DARK GREEN - COOLANT temp
B6: LIGHT GREEN - HIGH BEAMS
B7: DARK BLUE - RIGHT turn
    B8: WHITE - DISPLAY Dimmer

Basically stuff like right/left turn/charge/tmp/oil pressure, all take a positive input, and I soldered all mine to the back of my gauge cluster, instead of cutting into the harness..

The VSS I had to run all the way back to the computer in order to get it to work right,Just one wire and the was VSS-OUT on a OBD 1.5 setup it is pin B28 a DARK GREEN wire, then has a YELLOW and PURPLE right next to it wich are the VSS-IN's..

All I lack now is hooking up the dimmer switch, and positioning switch,Which are next to the light switch now This type of HUD can be put into just about anything...

yea the windshield on the van is tinted

sweet man, you can help me out!! haha i just got one of these out of the local JY here in town, along with a 2nd gear start switch.
most of these wires can be branched off of the cluster wiring, right?

Yes most of them,Although I had issues with the spedo, had to run that wire from the computer for whatever reason, the rest are tapped off the cluster..

i was under the impression that for HUD to work properly you had to have a certain windshield that has a special section to it....does yours have that? or is it a plain jane windshield?

no sorry i dont have...i was curious about the windshiled thing cause i just picked up a 98 grand prix gt...it has a huge crack in the windshield and i was asked if it had hud or not....that why i assumed if it was hud it might need a special window

there is a kind of decal where the HUD projects on to as far as i know, but you can see it on a normal windshield. my cousin had a bonnieville with HUD on it, replaced the windshield and used a normal one to save money, didnt care about HUD. well, it still worked.

I got this From someone at GMWBody.com
I substituted a 1991 euro cluster with oil pressure gauge in place of a regular cluster. The project vehicle is a 1992 lumina sedan. However, I have also dismantled the oil-gauge less cluster and input the info I discovered on it as well. The info here can help you to make any lumina cluster work.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if the all 90-94 base clusters are identical, please check this against your wiring, before you start.

90 and 91 Euro "ub3 type" clusters have oil gauges, 92-94 have voltmeters. 1992 clusters can be either/or they appear to have changed midyear.
Their are 7 seperate clusters used in Luminas that I am aware of:

1990 base cluster: thin lined monstrosity, with a light gray background
                    1991 - 1994: base cluster with a black ground

1990 gauge cluster: thin lined monstrosity with oil gauge and 3.1 redline
1991 - mid 1992 gauge cluster with oil gauge and 3.1 redline
1991 - mid 1992 gauge cluster with oil gauge and 3.4 redline
mid 1992 - 1994 gauge cluster with oil indicator, charge gauge and 3.1 redline
mid 1992 - 1994 gauge cluster with oil indicator, charge gauge and 3.4 redline

the shift indicator, or filler plate, is interchangeable between all the clusters.

I repinned my own connector. with practice and a good narrow jewelers screw driver it's quite easy. Just remember to tweek the lock tangs to ensure they lock when you reinsert. I would snatch an extra instrument cluster adapter before starting and practice depinning and reinstalling. I emptied an extra connector and transfered the wires one by one, so I wouldn't get confused.

Additionally, this swap requires a new temp and oil pressure sender (if oil gauge cluster) in place of the original switch. The sensor harness connectors are identical. Remember the oil sender is about twice as long as the switch.

The top row is C, bottom row is D and they go 1-16, left to right.

                    For the Base Cluster
First number is the base cluster pin location. Then the wire color and description. The last number is where it has to be moved to in the euro cluster harness.

D16 BRN/WHT Service Engine Soon (SES) (ECM grounds to light)

                    KEY:
not used= no connection, no wire was present, if there is an optional light I listed it. (ie shift if equipped)

For (C3 Pink/Black - Ignition Power D4/D11) this power wire must be spit to have a second wire , as the base cluster has one socket and the full guage cluster has two. in a proper euro harness they link.

For the tach, (D9 White - Tach Wire, analog) this wire is absent from within the car. I discovered that the tack wire is a small gauge white wire in the harness that meets the firewall behind the alternator(the C100 connector). It does not continue past there into the body. Open up this wire loom and you’ll discover bunch of wires. Only about 5 are small gauge, and the white wire will be obvious. Link it from there and run it inside the car to the cluster. Be sure not to have it run where it will get damaged and shorted.

Euro cluster C13 and D10 positions are two possible locations for the oil pressure wires. C13 in for the guage, D10 for the idiot light. This is the only know difference I have found between the two types of clusters.

This is a possible difference, I didn't track this info very well, but Euro cluster D1 and C3 (ie Tan/Blk? ie shift indicator if equipped?) either appear to be possible locations where a manual trans car would have up-shift, or down-shift indicators. I didn't have a year break down for these, sorry.

One last issue, some pins actually are identical to other pins, so a wire could be in a slightly different position (ie C7 instead of D7, fake example) this issue is usually the same number pin but different letter (ie C7=D7, or D13=C14, fake examples) This is visible on the back of the circuit board as the circuit line will run through both pins.

Supposedly the "HUD" windshields basically tested better in QC tests and thus = $200+ markup on them. Something along those lines.. where the display reflected better.

When I had my '90 GP windshield replaced, I went non-HUD replacement and I can still see everything very clearly with no ghosting. I swapped one into my '92 Cutlass too with a non-HUD aftermarket windshield; no problems there either.

                          A regular windshield will work.
Where you notice the difference is when the sun is bright and hits the windshield on the right angle, the numbers disappear, with a regular windshield.
But with the HUD windshield the numbers just go very light, but you can still see them. The reason I know this is from have regular vs. HUD windshields.

Under most conditions, the HUD looks the same.
If your regular windshields good, just leave it.

HUD install complete, well mostly. still have to mount it. anyone here mount a HUD in a Lumina before? oh yeah and one other thing... the check gages light. where do i pick that wire up from?

it all worked out with 90% of the wires coming from the cluster harness. even the VSS but im having trouble finding the blue wire from the harness entering the firewall. there isnt a single blue wire. it IS on the passenger side, right? should i be looking on the drivers side?
