  • Knock Module Loose....What Impact?

Well, my 3.4 DOHC swap saga continues..... I have verified the ignition and all it's parts are good, and I have a new set of injectors/fuel rail on it. STILL.....it runs like crap (won't idle, sets misfire P0300 code, etc). On my scantool (cheapo Actron....actually, midline of theirs, but still a POS) I see my ignition advance at -22/-24. Kind of weird.....but I chalk that up to a generic scantool. Still....

So, I decided to pull the PCM and check it over. Connectors were good, but when I opened up the knock module cover, the module literaly popped right out of the socket. It was NOT locked in and properly seated. I had no code for anything knock module related.....so would this thing still be working? If the module is out/not seated what symptoms would I have?

And no, I didn't snap it in and try starting it up again.....GF was over and is getting pissed about me working on the car all the time. I'm going to try that tonight....but I'm here at work completely distracted and frustrated with this whole thing.....

    Any help appreciated! THANKS!!!

The knock sensor is the device the computer uses to look for misfires. I believe if the sensor is malfunctioning or damaged that it could tell the computer there are knocks when there really aren't any. The computer pulls timing in order to prevent detonation. A new sensor should fix the misfire issue and restore timing so the engine can run properly.

Hmmm..... Actually, the knock module was actually IN the PCM, it just wasn't seated properly (ie, it fell out when I took the cover off) SO, I'm just going to plug it back in and see what happens. I didn't realize it had anything to do with detecting misfires....I thought it was just knock "tuning"... I learned something then

The engine is running like a total turd. So, if this doesn't work....I'm going to pop for a new PCM and if that doesn't work.....I'm going to drop it into a shredder and be done with it! Grrr.....

IIRC, that module is actually a filter that filters out the crap from the actual knock signals from the knock sensor. All you probably need is a good soldering iron and some patience, or a new MEMCAL.
