  • Swapping computers

Does anyone know if there is a ECM that I can swap into my 1994 Camaro that has a removable PROM. I know that the PCM I have now has a flash only chip in it. Any help

Almost any swap will require repinning the connectors. I have never seen one that was just a drop in, so to speak.

You can go to the older style (if you are willing to rewire and swap out the connectors), but be sure it is legal in your state. Also, be forewared that to do that might require swapping out EMISSIONS equipment.

Example would be if I went from a 1996 3100 computer (OBD2) to the 1993 3.1 computer (OBD1, but has a removeable prom), not only would have to to rewire and swap out the connectors, but I would have to rewire the engine to be MPFI instead of SFI, remove the MAF, put in the older EGR (which requires a different intake manifold).

I would recommend trying to find a similar setup to your car, and see if you can find one that has the different computer, but EVERYTHING else is the same. Reguardless, you are going to have to put some work into this to get it right.

Also, in my state (Texas), it is ILLEGAL for the engine to be run on an older computer system than the production year of your car. Older means the emissions equipment might not work. If you can pass it off as a newer one, go ahead, but here in Texas, the first thing they do is enter the cars vin into the computer, and plug in the ALDL connector. They didn't want to pass my car because it could not read the computer, but I had a NEWER engine, and NEWER computer in an older car, and had to threaten to call and report them.

Ok thanks man, so there really isn't a swap in computer for the 94 3.4 SFI, like not even some of the 3.1 SFI's wont work, or are they OBD2.

The thing is, your engine is SFI, but the older ones will be MPFI.

You MIGHT want to look at some of the trucks, or something.

Which engine do you have? 3.4? 3.4 SFI in the Camaro, but in the FWD, the 3.4 will be either a DOHC, or a if you get a 3.1 computer, it will be MPFI. That means rewiring your engine, as well as custom tuneing.

I am trying to think of any other cars that got the 3.4, but nothing is coming to mind right now other than the 3.4 DOHC, and the 3400. Either way, the 3400 does not have a removeable prom, and the 3.4 DOCH will have to have the engine rewired, as well as custom tuning, etc.

Get me some some basic info on your car, and I will see if I can find something out.

            K. Let me do some searching and see what I can come up with.

Did some checking, and i am going to do more, but so far, there is NOT going to be an easy answer to this.

So far, since yours is an SFI engine, it has a FLASH computer. The easiest thing I am coming up with so far is converting the car to MPFI and using an older camaro 3.1 computer. That pretty much requires pulling the entire engine wiring harness (which is SFI specific) and swapping in the 3.1 harness, then most likely repinning the ECM connectors, then custom tuning the 3.1 computer to work on a 3.4. It might drive with the stock chip, but it will not be even close to optimal.

It really is not as big a job as it sounds, BUT if you are NOT familiar with wiring and repinning, it is a PAIN to do. I LOVE wiring myself, and could do a job like that in a weekend (as long as I did all of my research first meaning, the week was spent with my nose in service manuals).

Someone that does not like doing wiring, it could take a week, or MORE to do. It could even take a month if you are really not familiar and are just learning.

I will talk to one of my friends and see what he has to say, but so far, because you have an SFI engine, you will not find something plug-n-play. Almost everything with SFI is a flash computer (there are a few exceptions, but nothing plug-n-play), and using an MPFI computer will require modifying the engine wiring harness.

Oh, well the whole reason that I ask is because I was considering getting an Ostrich 2.0 by Moates. Thats why I wanted a removable PROM. Is there anyway to possibly remove the PROM in mine and plug in that Moates??? Thanks I really appreciate your help man.
