  • if you know your stuff.....

I was reading this and that on the net, and came across somebody saying to someone...
"well a tune could bring your stock PCM to that of a Grand Ams'"

My question is, why not just use a Grand Am PCM? While an obvious answer to some, I havent the slightest clue....
Why would I personally have my PCM tuned.... could I not use a PCM out of a sportier car, i.e my 97 malibu 3100, with a XX Grand Am 3400... and just use different injectors...

Somebody teach me something... because while I dont have large port and all this, I know that motor and trans could do more than go get groceries...

    I don't get it?

Bring your PCM to that of a Grand Am's? Are you trying to imply a Grand Am is a sportier car tune wise?

The engines make about the same power, any difference is from VERY SLIGHT tuning differences, different type of tranny, etc.

      Got a link for this?

But for your question, you can't just swap PCMs because each vehicle has a different BCM. These are 2 separate computers that must be able to communicate between each other. If they can't then the car won't start.

Maybe you were referring to what I said that if you swapped 3400 top end on, and then got it tuned with the same spark/fuel tables you'd be at the same power as the 00 malibu you drove... I would use the 00 malibu tables or grand prix since they both use large port 3100 and 3400 might be different due to the extra displacement.

You *might* be able to use a 97 venture ECM, if your car doesn't have BCM and theft modules. I know the 97 vans didn't but your car may be different. If that works then a 3400 swap with your same injectors and FPR would be dead on for that ECM assuming the transmission stuff is the same and won't cause speedometer errors....

It's just easier to tune your ECM so you don't run into this stuff. Just change the stuff you need like fuel/spark tables. Then you don't run into BCM or transmission tables as being different.
